I started collecting handmade knives in 1979 and over the years have had quite a few knives engraved. I was just wondering who is your favorite engraver.
My top two are Gary Blanchard and Steve Lindsay.

I have used:
George Sherwood
Fred Harrington
Harry Limings
Sam Alfano
Ben Shostle
Mitch Moschetti
Lynton McKenzie
Ron Smith
Old Domioion
Tim Herman
Varamontez
Mel Wood
Gary Blanchard
Steve Lindsay
Sanchez

Good Collecting!

Jocko,

I am a big fan of engraved knives and your list is pretty extensive. I have several knives engraved by Chris Meyer, he does absolutely great animals. Three of my knives have been featured in magazines and Weyers book, POI V.
When it comes to scroll, I am blown away by Julie Warenski. She
has done two for me and they are incredible.
It's decision time this week. W.D. Pease called to tell me that
a knife is shipped. I'm leaning towards cougars and gold. Chris did a
Broadwell stag fighter for me with a cougar profile.

PS: My first engraved knife was a Boot Dagger by Steve Huey engraved by George Sherwood. Great Stag and nice scroll. Probably 1990.

Win,
My first engraved knife was a W.D.Pease 3 finger boot
knife which I sent to George Sherwood for engraving. Total cost (knife and engraving) was $160.00,boy they were the good old days.
Right now Tim Herman's color engraving just blows me away. One of these days I'm going to have to buy one of Tim's knives with color engraving.
I too have a knife in one of Weyer's books. It is the Jess Horn knife on page 82 of POI Book III which was engraved (carved) by Gary Blanchard. This is the prize of my collection.
Bill Pease's work is fantastic and I have seen Chris Meyer's work, this should turn out to be a great combination.
Good Collecting !

P.S.
I lived in New Jersey most of my life before moving to the Syracuse area. Lived in Wood-Ridge then Wallington then Hackensack.

I don't own an engraved knife as yet, but Tim Herman has agreed to engrave a Kit Carson fixed blade for me. I don't think it's a secret that Tim Herman's favorite engraver is Steve Lindsay.

Also on My Wish List is a JW Smith knife with color engraving, that he learned from Tim Herman. Small world huh?

When I'm really dreaming big I picture this knife with stag inserts.

That's some awefully nice black lip pearl, can I have it Phil :D

JOCKO,

Having seen, commissioned, and owned the work of all those engravers, I'd imagine you have accumulated quite a bit of knowledge on the subject. Though I certaintly don't have the experience that you do, I'll have to agree that Steve Lindsay's work is right up there in the "museum quality" category of engraving. In fact, I was so impressed when I first saw pictures of his work, that I started a thread about him here in this forum. I found the responses in that thread quite interesting as well.

You also mention Tim Herman, who continues to wow all of us with his distinctive style and grace, his artful eye and his beautiful colors (the not-so-beautiful smells notwithstanding ;) ). Indeed, Tim, who happens to be a great friend of Steve Lindsay's actually uses Lindsay's patented AirGraver system.

Finally, there is Julie Warenski, who's use of gold inlay and true mastering of the bank scroll continue to amaze me every time I see her work.

These three artists comprise, in no particular order, my list of favorites. They combine skill and style in a way that only the best can do. There are others who also do fantastic work, but none really seem to meet my personal tastes quite the same way these artists do.

Which is why I'm already on the wait-lists of two of them already :)

Great thead JOCKO,
Engraving does not get much play time here and there are some knives on occasions that just scream for it.

That is a fantastic representation of engravers in your collection.
It is an area I have not paid as much attention to as I would like. My personal favorites are favortes are Steve Lindsay, Sam Alfano and Tim Herman, but I do not have any examples of their work.
I also like Winston Churchill's work.

I only have a few in my collection that are engraved by Fred Harrington, Julie Warenski and Ben Shostle. I am hoping that the engraving on a dagger I picked up from Sava Damlovac last year will be ready at Blade.

There are few engravers I DON'T like, but all the above's work I DO!

I own a few engraved knives:
Julie Warenski for a Jot Singh Khalsa folder (her style is SO unmistakable and elegant)

Scott Pilkington did my Sawby integral with a wildlife scene

Chris Meyer is right up there with work on Jack Levin's art folder

Jim Small just reworked my Louis VanDer Walt folder. (Jim is almost finished with a pearl/damascus W/H Lancet i also sent him. Pics soon.)

Frank Conroy did my titanium 'box cutter'

Pat D'Holder did a super job on D's three-finger skinner. (D' likes to use Bruce Shaw for his wildlife engraving, but if I had a choice, PAT work would grace my knife every time.)

And there are others, not so well known, but their work enhances the final product: Bertie Reitveld, 'Whisker's' Allen, Ferenc Tumpec, Wayne Reno

I also am having Ron Knott do the work on my upcoming subhilt from David Br....... Oooops! Too much info! ;)

For simplicity and economy of style, NO ONE beats Joyce Minnick. She can knock me over with a simple curved arc.

So the answer to the post is: EVERYONE! Just like knives, I don't have only one great maker whose work I like, but LOT'S of great artists. :D

How about Simon Lytton, an Englishman who does a couple of shows in the States. I give or send him the knife and he brings it back when he
returns. Amongst the best at scroll.

Jon Robyn, partner in the now defunct Barrett-Smythe. I used to love getting "SPORTING CLASSICS", just for their ads.

I've got to have Steve Lindsay do one. I have several Sawbys on order,
one of those should go to Steve.

Hi,

I personally don't have a favourite but I am told that Tiz Pozzobon is among the best:

I have the pleasure of owning a knife that's been engraved by Tiz (Now calling himself Adone). I asked him to hold me a space for another knife

since engraving is a visual medium, I was glad to see some images put into this thread. The Harkins Shard is a wonderful work of art.

Thought, based upon the visual idea that a photo = 1k of words, some more images of knives with engraving might be appropriate.

Brian Lyttle has been mentioned. Here is one example of his work with gold on his damascus.

Jon Robyn previously of Barrett and Smythe and Old Dominion did the work on this Tom Overeynder folder

Tom+Overeynder+folder.jpg

while another past member of ODE, David Perdue worked on this DF Kressler integral hunter

Who can forget the ever prolific knifemaker Harvey Mc Burnett. Whether scroll or wildlife, Harvey did some wonderful engraving.

That is just a sample of some of the engraved knives we have collected. Other engravers include Roland Robidoux, Christian Meyer, Martin Butler, Jim Ence, Bruce Shaw and Patricia Walker.

hopefully from the Yahoo Photos all the images will continue to display.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Martin Butler who usually engraves for Wolfe Loerchner.I don't know too much about engraving but the job Joe Rundell did on Mike Leach's folder is amazing. If anyone has POI book 4 look on pg.169.Joe made 6 engraved metel panels which the closed folder would fit into completing the picture. The lid of the box was also inlaid and carved. This knife and box was also in one of the magazines at least 10 years ago.

Steve Lindsay, Julie Warenski, and Ron Skaggs....but not necessarily in that order.
