I've been looking for a good medium-large fixed blade (5"-8" blade) for over a year. I want something high quality and I'm willing to put some money into it so I've been waiting for something to grab me as a "I must have this" knife but haven't had much luck until I started checking out the offset design of the nessmuk / canadian belt knife. I was tinkering around on google sketchup and came up with this design that's been growing on me more and more. I feel like I'd love to have something like this riding in a horizontal or highly canted sheath:

Anyway is there anyone out there already making something like this? Is my design a sound one? Would you call it a nessmuk, canadian belt knife, abomination or something else entirely? If I need to go to a custom maker for it I am willing but I know so little as to what I should ask for that any help here would go a long way.

Thats a good design, its definitely more canadian belt knife than nessmuk but a solid design either way. The grind appears to be a scandi though, was this intentional? A design like that may be better suited to a hollow, flat, or convex grind, however a high angled scandi may work well too (perhaps 18 to 22 total grind angle).

As far as production knives, check out the Bark River Canadian Camp (6.5") and Canadian Camp II (8") as your sketch is fairly close to the same profile. I don't have either of these but have the smaller Canadian Special (4 1/8") which I really like the design of. They have a convex grind where your sketch looks more like a scandi grind as JCKT noted or perhaps a sabre grind.

I have been contemplating a custom with certain Canadian belt knife styling points myself. I have discussed it with a maker that I have several other knives from but just haven't decided on the materials and a few design elements.

Hi Bake,

I just received this custom knife made by Brian Efros. I too wanted sort of a cross between a Nessmuk and Canadian Belt Knife:

I wanted the blade "shorter" than a normal Canadian Knife. The blade is 3.5". The handle is 4.5" (and very comfortable). OAL is 8" inches.
I think this is a VERY good sized knife and I am more than pleased with how it turned out. Of course Brian could make you a knife to whatever size you'd like. Good luck in your search.

Great leads. The Grohmann knives are almost exactly what I had in mind. I'm going to see what I can find at blade show next month since I made the impulse decision to buy myself a ticket last night. I'll bring the wife and kids and they can go see some sights while I see if I can track down a canadian belt knife among other things (Edge Pro perhaps?).

Hardball, that knife is awesome. I'm definitely checking out that maker.
