Do you generally wear an apron when knifemaking? If so why and when.

Also do you have a good source for a leather forging apron. Anybody wear split legs extra long?

Discuss!

:)

Generally, since I don't use a forge, it's just a denim apron for the messy stuff like grinding on metals, micarta & wood. For finish sanding by hand it isn't necessary. I don't use it for epoxy, but always have nitrile gloves on for glues & finishes. Just think of it as an apron for the hands?

custom heavy denim apron from Renith Haru on Etsy
leather straps and nice brass hardware
wish it had split legs.

philosophically If I'm going to make and sell myself as a - handmade in the USA - product maker, I like to try and buy and support the same if I can :-)

T star leather apron custom built with double leather on chest for when i grind razors (i grind on the top of the wheel for more control but that means sparks and grit right on my chest )

I wear a leather aprons at all times. It really the uniform of knifemakers

I have one that I got with some welding leathers but I don't ever really wear it.

I wear a thin shop apron sown from raindeer leather. Looks like new after 100 hours at the forge and 100 hours grinding. Really good material. Hot scales bounce of and dust don't stick.

For forging, I wear a leather apron of heavy water buffalo hide. It is patterned off Bill Moran's with adjustable neck and waist straps and snaps.
Double layers on waist/groin area. Center pocket on chest. It has split legs that cover to the knees.

I have a buffing apron of heavy split leather with a double thickness from the neck to the groin.

Where did ya get those? anyplace online to look at them?

I wear a Hobart split leather apron almost all the time when in the shop. I usally can only grab an hour of shop time here and there during the week so it saves me from having to change clothes (mostly).
