Why all the fuss about the Spyderco Manix2 XL S90V?

It's just a great knife all around. Fits well in the hand, bigger blade, not sure what else to tell you. Either you like it or you don't.

I'm not fussing about it. Then again I don't start threads about knives I don't care for.

Boys love their toys, and this is a sweet toy. The Manix 2 XL is an awesome knife to begin with, and the S90V and carbon fiber blings it up real good. I agree with you about the grind finish on the blade, but that has never slowed me down with other Spydie products. I'd like to have one, but just can't be dropping that kind of coin on every knife I like.

High vanadium content steels (like S90V) are much more difficult to bring to a more polished cleaner satin finish, hence the very aggressive, coarse grind lines on it. After all, they're still factory made so it's not like Spyderco is going to take the time and $$ to clean the grinds up substantially. Plus the whole "as ground" finish is pretty trendy right now.

A lot of Spyderco's come with those vertical grind lines. You can tell from the picture that the sun is shining right on the knife and highlighting the lines. I doubt this particular model's grind lines are more noticeable than others with the similar "raw" finish. There is no "cheap" S90V, S90V is S90V. S90V has better edge retention than 99% of the steels being used in cutlery today, and CF is very popular as well. Also, big knife guys will love it, it is a monster. I will be skipping it due to its size, but do think it is a pretty awesome knife.

Is there even such a thing as cheaper S90v from CPM? I don't even really see S90v used by other knife companies, much harder on workers and machinery. I'm glad Spyderco uses it. If you prefer a mirror finish for the display case, it can be done.

I've heard good things about s90v, even though I have not had the opportunity to try one out for myself, that might be why people like this knife. Blade steel is an important factor

The grind lines wouldn't bother me, some of the reports of very off centered blades on that model would. However, in all honesty, $220 for a knife that size with carbon scales and S90V is going to be popular if for no other reason than guys buying them to flip them once they are sold out. Look at what the paramilitary carbon fiber, and Manix 2 carbon fiber versions are selling for now. Secondary market for limited/exclusives right now is insane.

I have an XL now that I never carry because it's so wide in the pocket, but I'm tempted to sell it just to buy this version as I've been experimenting with higher end blade steels.

I bought one because 1) I wanted to try s90v and theres few, if any other knives with s90v at that pricepoint and 2) the manix 2 xl is my absolute favorite knife and I want every variation that comes out so it was actually a grail knife for me considering how sought after the other spydies with cf/s90v are. I personally like the grind lines, they look good. I do wish they polished the liners more cause you can see the lines in them so for a higher priced and limited production knife they should be more picky on the f&f, which I see as a reasonable request but I still love the knife.

I took a look at the website and the blade doesn't look properly polished, lots of vertical scratches. Is this some sort of cheaper S90V blade steel. What is the attraction to this knife as opposed to a Military model? Is the flat grind the cause of the scratches?

Thoughts?

I know right? is almost like the people who made this knife want people to go use the hell out of it, so weird. don't they know expensive knives with super steels are only for flicking open and closed while watching movies about special forces. or the occasional paper cutting review on YouTube?

spyderco needs to get their act together.

I did not notice any fuss. The only topic that I've seen so far about that knife was on Spyderco forum with most of the posters seem to agree that it does not offer particular value for the price. That is a valid point in my view and does not qualify as "fuss". Or do I miss something?

all the Spyderco knives I have in S30V, S35V and S90V all have lines like that on the blades. I was under the impression those lines cant be polished out of this type of steel. I have also had a buck in S30V that had the same noticeable lines I think its just a property of the steel.
