my wife and I have been talking about this lately and I would like to see what your take on this is......I put this is W&SS because this is where I spend almost all of my time, if it needs to be moved, then do as you please.......thanks!!!

Why do men co camping????

I don't like to camp just for the heck of it----like in one of those crowded, organized campgrounds. I'd rather stay at home and just visit the area. The reason I camp is so that I can spend an extended amount of time in some wild and beautiful places.

I can't say, my lady seems to like it, but like most we go way the hell out of our way just to get out and be by our selves, and not in the city.

But, at the same time, we don't got a lot together. She doesn't like bugs, dirt or the smell of smoke, but, she likes shooting guns, and on the odd time will come hunting, so Im happy. :D

my wife says that it's more a man's thing than a woman's......

aahhh... me man, me go out to hunt and gather!

Well, I do it to feel less dependent on the 'systems' and the 'stuff' that can assist but also control modern life, also for a reality check on survival skills and for relaxation! Plus I get an excuse to play with knives... :D

To have a little peace and quiet, get away from all the continuous movement of "normal" life. I find it very relaxing to go out camping, make a fire, cook some good food, drink a few beers, and just relax. A friend calls it recharging the batteries, de-stressing.

Plus it's just plain fun. :D

My wife would disagree...she loves the outdoors, not so much hunting, but backpacking, camping, fishing and she loves rock climbing. She's arleady said she wants to find a few wilderness survival schools to attend together or with the family. I couldn't have found a better woman! My serenty would definately include being with her!

In my modern day to day world it feels to me that many things try and speed up time. Commercials pushing the next holiday way too early, things like that. I blink my eyes and the kids are grown,(almost:) ),
When we and/or I camp, time slows down. The noises are different, I can watch a bunch of squirrels play grab ass all afternoon, while I cook and breath fresh air:)
That PBJ tastes so wonderful on a trek, that morning cup of strong coffee never smelled so good, the mulled cider with a shot of something just before bed leads to such a warm sleep.

Most men camp as a compromise. Men don't want to camp - they want to LIVE. They don't want to hike, they want to simply move from one place to the next with all they need to live on their backs. Modern man 'hikes' and 'camps' as a socially acceptable way of being what he wants to be. Men don't want to 'hunt' - they want to kill to live. (No wonder we are pissed off when hunting is challenged.)

Men desperately, and I mean that in all its force, desperately want (I think need) to challenge themselves, to do things that matter, to live where their lives are on the edge of survival, and where decisions need to be made properly or death is a real possibility. However, due to what we have created in the name of ease and relaxation (society) we have neutered ourselves.

Like Thoreau said:

"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them."

In our current society, most men live their lives inert, emasculated, neutered, and domesticated. They do things, sports, collecting, business, and so on, in the attempt to live the life of testosterone and adrenaline. What camping and hiking is, is the attempt to live our lives by our terms, do things that matter (cut the wood, make the shelter, kill and dress the food...) and live like men... not the feminine men we have become.

I want to forge a blade that destroys the political correctness of modern culture (be honest and true, call people what they want to be called, but don't pussy foot around every subject so that it cannot be expressed at all), the artificial ease and pace at which we live (we make BOB's because we know this security we have is temporary and false), the lack of nature we build, the shoes on my feet that remove me from nature, and the rest of the things that drain my manhood, remove my purpose, and destroy my soul.

In a response, I want to load my pack, pick it up, move out with my family, and live a life that has purpose... It is difficult to do this any more... so I camp.

I enjoy camping, hiking and the outdoors because it allows me to clear my mind and think about whatever I want. It's amazing how refreshing a 2 hour hike "away from it all" gives such a sense of fulfillment.

There's something about being out in the woods, camping that forces you to relax and enjoy what God has given us.

Very well said  I would only add that most men want a life of occasional adventure, most women do not. Men are hunters, women are gatherers. Men go hunting for a mastodon while the women sit in the cave and keep the fires going, keep the pot boiling, waiting for the men to drag home the mastodon meat. Men want adventure, women want security. Men want to take a whizz on the lawn, women want a secure toilet. Life is good that way.

Literature is full of stories of men going off in search of adventure: The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Moby Dick, The Last of the Mohicans, Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
