Wife is terrified of this thing…

If it’s a new-new house I’d be a little uneasy as well. (No idea as to ancestry.)

If the wife strongly don't like it , just best get rid of one or the other ! 🤪

What's to be afraid of? Just standard equipment for cannibalistic serial killers who like to wear their victims skins.

Check the yard for fresh graves. And don't forget the crawlspace under the house.

😁

Your photo doesn't show it but is there a wooden handle inserted into that large bolster?

I'd take it but I already have a 2 3/4# cleaver that I inherited from my father (a professional sous chef).

Say what you will about EB, but it's a great research vehicle. Just learned by running a search that this cleaver of mine is a Lamson Mohawk 828. The markings on the blade are long gone but the 828 still shows on the handle.

My primary concern about the OP's cleaver is that the handle looks like round tubular stock w/o any visible mechanical attachment to the tang, which raises the question of how well the blade is attached to the handle. If I owned it, I'd "fix" that.

Otherwise, it should be a fine tool for breaking beef bones/ribs and/or cutting off chickens heads. LOL! ;)

I wondered where I left that...

When you are as deranged as I am, you sometimes forget to finish the job. Oh well. I'd appreciate it if you don't turn it in to the police.

Ok enough joking around. I have no clue as to manufacture, I know nothing about cleavers.

Brand appears to be WM Beatty & Son: LINK
The linked catalog is from 1885, and the Beatty & Son was absorbed around 1905ish, so it's probably well over 100 years old.
There're a few on Ebay right now.

I’m a bit of a jerk, so I’d probably have a little fun stashing it in random places around the house.

I once did that with a Santa Clause doll to a coworker. The grand finale was getting it in his back seat after teasing him with it for a week.

He didn't see the doll until he was half way home from work. Apparently, he burned it in a fire after that. Bwhahaha

Good call, it looks like this one marked "Diamond Cast Steel" like the OP's.

At only 1#, it probably looks bigger in the pic than it actually is; blade must be very thin.

Your wife has a keen eye: looks in the photo like the blade has been welded to the tang/handle, and not very well at that ?

I wouldn't worry about it. For some reason cleavers seem to get left behind quite a bit. I've found one where I lived, it was left with a bunch of old dishes, and some beat up pots and pans in one of the cabinets. There have been posts here before of other people finding them too.

I did something like that to my younger cousin (girl) about 10 years ago on Halloween

She's scared of the friday the 13 movies so took a bluntened machete and a hockey mask from her bro and hid them both behind the door in her room

She did not take that well
