Will a A/C recovery system work for vacuum?

I think this should get more replies in another part of the forum, rather than the " Tech Support, General Q&A, Site Feedback" here.

Possibly in the Shop Talk - BladeSmith Questions and Answers section

You need a vacuum pump. A recovery machine doesn't draw as high a vacuum. It works different than a vacuum pump.

You should be able to trade the recovery machine to an AC tech and get a vacuum pump in exchange.

Thank you for the info. In my mind I was thinking , ok it has to vacuum or suck out, so I ask my buddy to make sure it sucks. He put his finger over it and it did so I thought great , free unit better than Harbor Freight. Then I thought welllllllll maybe not. Hence me asking folks more familiar with this stuff. Thank you sir, you saved me from wrestling with that 75 lb. machine. 🤬

It is a pump. Pumps push things, vacuums suck things. The recovery pump does draw a bit of a vacuum as it pumps out the Freon into a recovery tank, but not to the same level as a vacuum pump exhausting all air from the lines before charging the system.

recovery machines are rated at 10 to 15 Hg vacuum and wont remove moisture very well. a good vacuum pump can do 29.xx Hg. basically double what the best recovery machine can do
