Will/can Case fix this? Update: Knife back from Case

I have a Case mini Copper lock with the tool mark blade that I love:

I've noticed the rear bolster has a gap. I've had the knife for awhile, but I lost it for a bit (in the house, in a safe spot--i guess you could say I "re-discovered" it, rather than lost and found it). I don't remember if it always had the gap and I just lived with it, or if it's something that has developed.

I don't want it replaced, but will (or can) Case fix the gap under warranty service?

Update:

Got it back from Case last week (too about a month, give or take a week). Love this knife--are they made in CV steel?

I would guess that it would be an easy repair for Case to perform. They're pretty responsive to email inquiries. Send them those pictures and see what they have to say.

I'm nearly certain that you'll get a positive reply with return instructions included.

I've used Case's repair service. They do a good job. I'll bet that can be fixed. When you send it in, tell them if it's not repairable, you don't want a replacement knife. Also if you like the edge on it, ask them not to sharpen the knife. They sharpen as a matter of course.

Nice looking knife. What is "the tool mark blade"?

The bolster does not have a gap. The liner has a gap. It will help the manufacturer understand the problem if you describe it as a gap in the liner. This is not an uncommon problem with knives that are made with pinned construction. Sometimes torque can loosen up a pin. Case should definitely be able to fix it.

If/when you send it in, be sure to include a note indicating that you do not want it replaced. In large bold text, underlined, highlighted, and circled.

I think he's referring to the "As ground" blade Jake.

Unless the pin has pulled at the bolster (and that should be very visible), then it left the factory like that, and that would definitely be covered under warranty.

Let us know what they say. If you have them fix it, some before/after pics would be cool.

Easy fix for Case's warranty. I've used their warranty service before and it went smoothly and relatively quickly. Also, you might just be able to whack it with a rubber mallet on a piece of wood and call it a day. I've done that to plenty-a-slip joint to tighten down a wobbly blade. Since this is the rear of the knife, you shouldn't have to worry about affecting the action, and it might save you the shipping and 3-4week turnaround time.

Case can be very interesting. A while back I Baught a case trapper in bonestag from a local place and they only had it in stainless, and after some internet research I found it was only made with stainless. Not really a deal breaker at first but after a while I realized I wanted CV and asked Case if they could at my Expense replace the blades with CV ones. Now this knife is a trapper, it wouldn't be hard to swap the blades since there are so many different ones with and without CV blades. Case replied a few days later stating that they could not do it even if I paid for it because they did not make that style of blade in Carbon steel. That don't make any sense! But for warranty work they seem to be pretty good.

I'd take them at their word, they know their parts. In addition, you basically requested a customization of your knife. Not many manufacturers will do that; I can't think of any traditional knife making company that offers that kind of service. For most factories, it'd be a nightmare. Most warranty/repair operations are cost centers not revenue generating operations.

Case will replace blades for the cost of the blade, but it has to be the standard part for that knife. I had it done, and I think it was $25 or $30 including labor per blade.

As per swapping the SS blades for CV... Purely speculation but they probably meant that it had to be a CV knife from the factory to receive CV blades. A certain modern folder company that replaces blades told me the same thing once when I asked if they would replace an S30V blade with a 204P blade at my cost.

At that price point it'd probably be cost effective to just buy a CV knife, because they do make bone stag trappers in CV and they cost pretty much the same as the SS knives. 2 or 3 days shipped from a dealer vs 3 or 4 weeks back and forth from case to swap blades...

I'm not really all that heart broken over it. I assumed that they wouldn't do it, but the response they gave was just a little weird to me. "Sorry we don't make CV blade for that model." Looks online- finds dozens of trappers with CV blades. I do wish that they would make them with brass bolsters. I wish more company's had brass bolsters, I've found that I prefer the look of a darker bolster on a light handle meterial like Bone stag.

That gap in the bolster does look like it left the factory like that, it does not appear to be separating anywhere else. It looks like the liner is bent on the end. Not sure how it could have left the factory that way.
