Will hydrogen peroxide hurt knife? What to take smell away?

So I was cleaning a gator the other night and the knife I was using got dull so I just pulled out my Benchmade Rift and kept going. It now has a smell to it. I know it will go away with time just wondering if some hydrogen peroxide would speed it up.

The knife is made of stainless and G10. Any thoughts on this? I know H2O2 is an oxidizer to some extent just not sure if it would hurt metal. Thanks!

Scrub it with baking soda and then give it a quick rinse with vinegar, followed by plain water.

Alcohol is another option. I know it won't hurt the stainless, but I've never tried it on G10

I don't know what G10 is, so can't address that issue, but normal household peroxide is
only 3% and won't hurt any steel.

Even acetone doesn't seem to affect G10. Mind you, I don't recommend soaking your knife in a tub of it, but a quick wipedown is fine.

Hydrogen peroxide is a corrosive. It's OK to wipe your blade with it as long as you rinse and oil the blade afterward. I wouldn't flush the knife or soak it in peroxide.

If it were me, I'd disassemble it, clean like I normally would -- remove all old oil or grease, wipe down metal parts with WD40 or maybe BreakFree if rust is a concern, and clean the handle scales with alcohol, soap and water or whatever you like. Then if it still smells, leave it disassembled for a while to see if the odor doesn't just go away on its own in a few days ... after that, I'd start considering something more, uhmm, creative. If it seems to be the G10 scales holding the odor, I might try exposing them to some good ol' natural UV light ... nothing like a little sunshine sometimes. :)

Thanks for the replies!

I tried soaking it in some water that I added baking soda to. That didn't do anything but a paste of baking soda on the G10 probably would have worked better.

I then dumped some hydrogen peroxide on it and let it sit for about 30 seconds and then rinsed and dried it good. That helped but still had a little bit of a smell.

There was a small spot of rust on the clip so I decided to use some baking soda tooth paste and a toothbrush and got the rust off and went over the G10 real quick with the brush. I rinsed and dried it and it seems to be gone or at least covered with a slight mint smell.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now I just need to go put it on the paper wheels to get it push cutting paper sharp and put it back in my pocket.

I still need to debone a gator tail but will use a fixed blade for that. More importantly I need to fry up some of that fresh tail and eat it!

Thanks,

Ryan

For that sort of thing I'd soak it overnight in water, there's nothing to absorb the blood on that knife, so it's just dryed up and in the crevices. A long soak should make it easy to flush out with some hot soapy water. Enzyme cleaners available at pet shops also work great at getting rid of biological odors.

Put it in a pocket of an old pair of jeans and wash and dry them. Take it out and oil it good. Done deal. Sounds crazy but it does work.--KV
