Has anyone used one of those?

Whats is there capacity and are they really weather proof?

Is there anything better short of learning to start fire by friction?

Thanks.

I use Windmill lighters all the time. I have a number of spares too ;)
I'm also liking the Light-My-Fire firesteel as a last resort.
Fire by friction? Yea. Try that in a driving rain storm!

When I was doing a lot of hiking in the mountains in the east and out west in the desert areas I carried some of the military heat tabs for emergency firestarting. These would get even wet woods going fairly quickly. I also carried a couple of the small road flares just in case a storm was so bad I couldn't light the heat tabs.

You could also carry a film container of potassium permanganate and one of glycerin for emergencies as well...

I love mine, but I have read post here where some say that at high altitudes they sometimes do not work properly. Out here in good old flat Indiana they work great. Very pleased with my bright orange Windmill which always lights on the first strike...

When they work, there's nothing more effective than a Jet type lighter. That being said, as a long time pyro and smoker, I have gone through over a dozen of various quality, from $5- $100, and I have NEVER encountered one that I would trust for even EDC, much less the woods. I EDC a orange zippo, which always works when it has fuel, and, when I'm going a little classier, the $5 IMCO brand austrian lighter from country comm. I'd stick with one of those as a primary lighter, with one of those waterproof "peanut" lighters as a backup.

Try the Blazer PB 207. The original and still most reliable torch

I wholeheartedly agree. I've had mine since 1997. It's been refilled dozens of times, EDC'd for about 8 years, and it's still running strong. Nowadays I'm carrying the Z-plus insert (also from Blazer) in a Zippo case. I've been using that for 2 years without a problem.
