I am looking for a medium sized belt knife... 4.0-5.5 in blade or so.
I was pretty much settled on the Winkler belt knife 2, but some people have said there are better knives out there for the price/handles too small/etc.
Does anyone have an opinion on that? Or maybe another knife I should be looking at?
Currently the list is -
Lakonian Blade Works Spirit Walker
ESEE 4
Artificum Solis Clever Girl
Winkler 2 belt knife
Spartan Blades Nyx
Miller Bros Blades M27
Treeman Recon Hunter

Looking for something that is tough and can stand up to some abuse. Not too radical of a design, something thats going to work 100% of the time. Must have a guard of some sorts to keep the hand from sliding up. Under $400. Good sheath that comes with it is a definite +

You can go custom for that price in 3V. All are good choices if you want to go production though.

Try Survive! Knives, GSO 4.1, GSO 5.0 or GSO 5.1 - comes in CPM 3v, elmax (if you can find it), M390 (if you can find it), and CPM 20cv. There seems to be several on fleabay and if you're lucky, on the exchange.

There is also Busse/kin - goodstuff and can be found around $400 or less on the secondary markets too.

Thumbs up on 3V.

I don't have the belt knife . Here's my 2 cents- You want one , you can afford it-get it. Sure an EESE will work but it aint a Winkler. My choice is a Randall model 28 woodsman but if someone offered a swap I might be tempted. . .

It sounds like you are wanting something exceptional. My suggestion may be a bit of a stretch price wise but I would shop and maybe save a bit more for a Randall Model 15 Airman. There is nothing like the magic of a hand forged Randall.

Get the Winkler belt knife. I have had one, while the fit and finish would not be better compare to other $350 customs but when you look at the design, ergonomic, and aesthetic, the belt knife is far better than other knife in your listed.
