For those of you who have held and used any of the Winkler RnD tomahawks,
I am looking for feedback or opinions on:

(1) Feel and durability of the rubber handled versions?

I have held one of his wood handled 'hawks but I prefer something synthetic, and I am intrigued by the rubber material (but have some concern re: how it will stand up to long term use).

and

(2) Impressions of the "front spike" and how it affects the use of the tomahawk?

Obviously, the RnD 'hawk was designed primarily as a combat weapon, but as a multipurpose tool, I wonder how the front spike might impair utility chopping.

Any observations or experiences?

The rubber handles are grate if you ever get your hands wet or are in a damp area of operations, but for durability I'd go for the miacarta handles Mr Winkler offers. They are both good options. I went with the wood handles, y just like the fell of it more, they come textured for better grip and the3y look beautiful. They do get banged up a bit but that adds history to It. I carry it when I know I'm going to go to some bad places.

The spike does interfere when trying to chop truth a door or branches, its made to do bodily damage not utility tasks. That being say I have used it to brake door locks, windows, cut branches, puncture tiers, puncture kevlar and I even used my baby R and D hawk to quarter a pig once.

If your looking for a multy purpose tool get the Winkler combat axe. But if a straight weapon is your need the syoc is the one you want

Is there a difference between the Sayoc & the Winkler combat axes?

The one on the left is the Sayoc Winkler hawk, the one in the middle is the Sayoc Winkler baby hawk and the last one is the Winkler combat axe.

They are very different, each intended for a specific purpose, the sayocs are pure fighting hawks but the combat axe is a duel fighting breaching axe. I think out of the group I like the Combat axe the best.

How does the standard grey finish hold up after regular use?

That Caswell finish on the Axe, is going to end up looking like the knife. The knife was the same color when I got it, and I use it a lot, so that patina on the knife is a perfect example of what you will end up whit. The wood handles also go trough some color changes, its strange my knife handel has gotten lighter in color but my axe is darker.

My finish is wearing fast BUT the more it wears the scarier the hawk gets :D and use it a lot. I have used it a lot though, I have been showing my son what my uncle trained me, plus I keep getting side tracked when people want a brief display LOL.

I carried a Kimber Classic 1911 .45 first year production for years and had it reparked 3 times that fighting handgun looks scarier when its due for a fresh repark.

When I was doing security in S.A. I carrited it in a leather holster and when leather gets wet it stays wet. But it was and is always better to have the right tool in the tool box compared to a okay or bad tool with a great finish.

My current combat handgun is a Beretta M96 .40 Bridger model, here in a Florida it rusts quite often. BUT I have found no other pistol that I engauge many targets with the same speed and accuracy as I can the Beretta. The Glock it too light for this IMHO. Now I have found better carry guns but for a combat pistol this is the choice for me.

I veiw the Sayoc like this its the right tool for what I want in a fighting hawk.
