wish list for URBAN SURVIVAL ....

let's say you were to prepare a cache of "stuff" necessary for fifty or fewer people to make out in a scenario like Urban Survival.

I have been thinking about New Orleans and being left to fend against terrible things.

For instance, would you want a power plant for running lights at night or would you be resourceful enough to use several automotive head lights/ tail-lights in order to provide some form of illumination?

I would choose car lights, 12 volt DC, cause they are renewable energy.
I would want a small motorcylce battery with an electric fuel pump attached. With a short and long hose, I could extract fuel from stationary vehicles and or storage tanks. (above ground hopefully)

I would want several 12 ga shotguns to deal with pests like the folks encountered there.
Both snakes that crawled and those who walked.

what would be your list of this type of stuff to have stored away?

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Well for starters unless you want to look like a band of gypsies you need a secure location with limited access.

I think ya want to be reeeaaaal careful using a battery hookup to siphen gas!

The fumes don't like sparks.

Think back to the survivalist in the flim 'Tremors'. Underground bunker, food water, a wall of exotic firearms and loads of ammo.

For my wife and I, it's basically our home. We are on 6 1/2 wooded acres, one driveway, cannot be easily seen from the road, wood burning stove, propane furnace, propane cook stove, propane water heater, private well. Our generator is also propane and can be run off either our 325 gallon main tank or our 5 and 7 gallon BBQ propane tanks. It is powerful enough to run all the necessary things in our house along with our well pumps. We have two pumps, the pump that pumps water from the well to the 500 gallon water holding tank and a pump that goes from the tank to the house. In fact, the only way you would know we were running our generator is if you heard it running. For us, it's life as normal when the main power goes out. We also have plenty of tools, gas (which I put stabil in during the winter for my chainsaw), food, water, battery chargers, batteries, flashlights galore, lots of knives, firearms, ammo and small game such as rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, deer, coyotes to survive on for quite a long time should the need arise. Also we have two neighbors who are about 1000 feet on either side of us, they are also as nearly well prepared. Our location is such that our only major concern is earthquakes. Even though we live on an island and some of it would be subjected to a tsunami, our place would not be.

But more importantly, we live in a relatively small community and the criminal element would be small ..... very small. Besides, if it did show itself, it would be out gunned and gone very quickly. The folks here would work together to help each other out which has been demonstrated many times over the years during severe wind storms and snow storms. So it would be much better and safer to stay put.

It comes down to many different factors to consider. Where you live, what you live in, what potential threats could you be subjected to (natural and man made), could you stay or would you have to leave, what's the weather like, etc, etc, etc. No single plan will work for everyone all the time.

But it's good that you are thinking about such things and looking into preparedness possibilities.

No good in a place like New Orleans which is already below sea level and only got worse when the hurricane hit.

There's a lot of info on urban survival in the Wilderness & Survival forum on this website. It's in the Training section.
