Woo! Scored a Buck Mayo TNT!

It's such a shame that the Buck Mayo TNT was discontinued. It's been one of my "grail" knives since I found out about the model because it looked like a titanium framelock Vantage to me (of course, I'm aware that the TNT predates the Vantage, so if anything really it should be that the Vantage looks like a linerlock TNT with a flipper). Seeing the pictures of the TNT that Plumberdv received in error only served to further fuel my desire for the knife. So when I had the opportunity to snag a Buck Mayo TNT shortly afterwards, I took it.

The box is pretty beat up, but the knife (which is really what matters to me) is pretty much in new condition as far as I could tell. The knife isn't perfect - the edge grind is a bit uneven at the tip and the chamfering of the holes in the handle is a little rough and uneven. The edges of the handle could also use some rounding; the knife is mildly uncomfortable when gripped tightly. Aside from these points, the fit and finish of the knife is fantastic.

I really dig the design of the knife. I love the rounded spine and the high hollow grind of the blade. Unlike some reviews I read, I don't find the horns annoying; if I use the crescent shaped cutout in the handle as a rest for my index finger, my thumb rests behind the top horn; if I hold the knife normally, my thumb rests on the spine of the blade. In short, I like pretty much everything about the knife except the edges of the handle. If I ever manage to score a second Buck Mayo TNT, I would like to try getting the edges of the handle rounded and re-blasted to make it a user knife; for now, this knife is strictly an admiration piece for me.

Anyway, pictures! I compared the TNT against my EDC Vantage, since the similarities (or what I perceive to be similarities, anyway) between the two were what drew me to the TNT in the first place.

If it wasn't obvious already, I'm really glad I got the chance to snag my Buck Mayo TNT. Does anyone know why the TNT and other Buck/Mayo collaboration knives were discontinued? Were they not selling well? Did the collaboration come to an end, and if so was it a contract expiration thing or did they have a falling out?

Congrats! I've also been looking for a user one, no luck so far. I messed up and didn't buy one when they were out since it was a little small for my hand. Regret it now! Especially, since my job has changed and I can't carry things like I used to do.

Very cool. The one I received in error is finally on it's way to the rightful owner and my MS Vanguard should be here today. As much as I want the Vanguard, I'd have not been too disappointed if I'd gotten "stuck" with the TNT. I don't have that one, just a couple of the CF's.

I suspect that perhaps the Vantage and even the Paradigm lines were an attempt to produce a similar pattern at a more user friendly price. That's pure speculation on my part, but there's certainly a strong family resemblence. Coincidence?

Good work. The Buck Mayo TNT is one of the top ten knives everyone should try.

Send it to me and I'll anodize it for you. I have 200 volt DC power supply and a bucket of slurry can be prepared at the drop of a hat. What color do you like? The fuzzy finish on the titanium scales and clip make a fuzzy/dull canvas for the annodization. Polished/mirrored titanium surfaces make the best anodization surfaces IMHO. If that knife was polished it wouldn't be as grippy.

Congrats.

Those CF TNTs are really nice Plumberdv! I agree about the family resemblance between the TNT, Vantage, and Paradigm series. That was a strong draw for me when considering the TNT; I really like the Vantage pattern so I wanted to get my hands on the knife that seemed to be the design inspiration for the Vantage.

Hm, anodizing titanium eh? I did really enjoy seeing pictures of "bluebenzas" in the CRK forum. Anodizing could be something to consider, though I may hold off until I get a second TNT (if I were to be so lucky).

I've been playing with my TNT and I'm of two minds about what to do with it. On the one hand, it's a nice specimen and a discontinued item to boot, so I want to leave it as is and keep it as a safe queen to enjoy in all its pristine glory. On the other hand, I've been enjoying the TNT so much that I want to carry and use it; after all, life is short and knives are meant to be used, right? I'm trying to convince myself to be patient and try and wait for an opportunity to pick up a second TNT as a user so I can do both. If only I got into knives a few years earlier, when Buck Mayo TNTs were more readily available

I've got a question about lubing the TNT. I read the CRK forums so I've heard of CRK fluorinated grease, but although the TNT is a titanium framelock it also uses a different washer material - nylon? or is it nylotron? (I haven't taken the knife apart yet, just peered inside the handle with a light) instead of pb. I'm thinking the different washer material may change the speed and smoothness with the grease. Also, I've read that CRK grease is very smooth but slows the opening...I like my knives to open smoothly and quickly. Those of you that own TNTs, what do you like to lube them with?

The white washer is the lube.

I've had mine apart to anodize.

I've never felt the need to make the action smoother. It is smoooooooooooooooth from the jump. However, should it get crusty I would clean it and/or replace the washer. And, if you insist on adding something, I use food-grade mineral oil, a laxative at the drug store, in minute quantities because it works and doesn't taint/poison the taste of food I might cut with the knife for me or someone else.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the knife is plenty smooth right now. I just wanted to clean the knife thoroughly and, this being my first titanium knife and a discontinued one to boot, I wanted feedback from those with more experience before I just jumped in and threw a random pivot lube in the TNT.

Also, I was wondering whether anyone knew what Tom Mayo recommended for his knives?

I finally managed to pick up a second TNT, this time to carry and use. It was described as like new, lightly carried, and only used to cut paper. When I got the knife though, the edge had nicks in four spots on the blade, and there were three dents on the edges of the handle and numerous scratches on the surface. Since I intended on using this one though, I didn't mind so much. After a short sharpening session and some scotchbrite, the edge was restored, the scratches in the titanium were gone, and the light dents along the edges of the titanium are better hidden.

The top knife is my first (safe queen) TNT, the bottom knife is my second ("restored") TNT:

As you can see, the scotchbrite left a brighter satin finish on the titanium. I do kind of like the way it looks, but I miss the grippiness and darker color of the original blasted finish. Good thing I have two TNTs :p. It was interesting to me to note that the Buck/Mayo logo and the end of the hollow grind were placed differently on both knives. My "new" TNT has the logo placed further from the thumbhole and the hollow grind terminates closer to the handle than my first TNT. It's also easier to actuate the lock on my "new" TNT; I noticed that the lockbar relief was just slightly larger on than on my first TNT. I wonder if my first TNT was an earlier run, and these changes I'm noticing were refinements made later in production.

Anyway, I'm really enjoying my new TNT. It's currently in my secondary EDC rotation (I always carry my Vantage...that never rotates out), though it does feel silly to carry two practically identical blades (the TNT and my Vantage both sport S30V with high hollow grinds and the same cutting edge profile ).

Also, since I consider the Vantage and Paradigm lines to be part of the same family with the TNT as their predecessor, I took a couple of "family" photos (yes, all my Vantages and Paradigm are from the Avid line, except my EDC franken-Vantage) :D:
