I live in Hawaii. I just visited a restaurant suPply store to check out their boning knives. I was told by the owner that wood handled knives are now illegal and that the Feds came and cleaned out his stock due to H1N1 concerns. Does anyone know anything about this supposed new law? I told him that i could still order them online and he told that it's a "trap" and that the Feds will intercept the knife. Anyone have some cents to share on the subject?

Aloha!

Its not that new of a law.
Anyone or place that produces or prepares food for distribution or sale is not permitted to used wood handled knives (or wooden cutting boards/cutting surfaces) for health and sanitation reasons. This does not affect private individuals so you could still purchase and use a wood handled knife. The place you went was affected because they are a restaurant supply store meaning most all of their customers will be people selling food.

Ok, I new of that law regarding people processing food. I asked him if it referred to everyone or just people making and selling food. He told me they could come into my kitchen and take them out of my drawer. He also told me you can get 5 years in prison in Japan for possessing a wooden handled knife. :jerkit: Sounds like this guy doesnt have his facts 100% straight. It seemed ridiculous that someone couldnt buy or own a wood handled knife in his own household kitchen. In resturaunts or kitchens I can see why plastic handles are more sanitary.

Wow. I heard pakalolo was good stuff, but geez man, I think he needs to cut back.:D

Seriously, until I see a citation from the US Code or the FDA, I'm calling BS.
