Anybody know the content of the new wood mizer bandsaw blades? Not the older thinner ones, but the newer slightly thicker ones. It's early or I'd be a little more specific. I'll try to post the sizes latter today.

I tried a piece a couple of years ago, stuck it in the forge and it scaled up horibly, think it's got a high tungston content.

Anyway was wondering how it'd mix as far as damascus goes.

Thanks,

Will

Well I couldn't find any info, but hopefully will conduct an experiment tomorrow night and see if it'll weld in a small billet. If it works it'd be a great (read cheap) resorce.

Hard to know if the wood miser blades I use are the same. they are about 25mm wise and 2.5mm thick. It worked well on a couple of blade I made from it and I know a couple of others.

Depening on how much you need and how little shame you have. Try the local saw doctor. I go about twice a year and scround a few metres of new
band saw blade the same size but smaller teeth.

I don't feel at all shamed. I ask they saw yes or no. Some want you to pay new price for off cuts then I say no. To date I have never paid. However I did make a small knife for the bloke that gives it to me for free. I am more a hobby maker and give more away than sell. Except for my cheap knives I have sold hundreds of tourist knives.

My brother has a bandsaw mill and he uses Wood mizer blades, these are 1-1/4'' and on the thin side. A couple years ago I welded up a billet of 1095 and this saw blade and got a black billet, no contrast, so no nickel. The thicker blades may have nickel though.

PS - Just because it's a saw blade don't assume it has nickel in it, this goes for all saw blade material. Typically the larger band saw blades are 15N20 but not aways.

I tried some of mine once, and got some pretty good contrast. Thickness was in the .40's I think. I'll call them and inquire, but they don't give out this type of info normally. Maybe if I tell them I inhaled a blade tooth or something, I can get a MSDS(is that right?) sheet that will tell the makeup of the blade.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. The shop where I work keeps MSDS of every single material in the shop as a matter of safety policy...

I emailed there customer service department and while they wouldn't give me an alloy break down I told them what I was wanting to do with it and said it should work and that the blades have .5 nickle. I welded up a small billet with 1095 and it showed good contrast, not as good as the old L-6, but about the same maybe a little less than 1095 and 15&20. I'll make a larger billet after I figure out the heat treating and what kind of pattern I want to make.
