I was just at the local thrift store and found a pair of moccasins for $15 that I almost bought. They are boot height and have rubber soles, appear to be sewn with sinew, pretty nice looking and obviously not well-worn. I didn't buy them because my toe went basically right to the end and I don't know exactly if they should fit loose, tight, or in-between.
So, I was wondering, do any of you guys wear mocs in the woods? If so, what brand do you recommend? I really liked the pair I found but there was no manufacturer's tag or really anything on them at all, not even a size! I'm not looking for anything that would replace a good boot, doesn't have to be water proof or Benicio Del Toro's mocs in The Hunted, just something that would be comfortable and warm enough for fall hiking. If they are supposed to be to be tight, I'll run back and buy the ones I saw.

I wear softsoled mocs at least 50% of my trail time. Buy them small-the leather will stretch over use to fit your foot. I have three pair of Minnetonka double softsoles that hold up really well. I wear size 11 and typically buy 9.5 mocs. After a day of walking around town they are shrinkwrapped to your feet like a second skin. They only cost 30 bucks. Check out H Trask's lineup too.

If you really liked them, go back and shell out the fifteen bucks and try 'em out. Wear them around the house, yard, etc. for a couple of days and see how they feel. I would imagine that the buckskin upper would stretch some with use.

If, after that time you don't like them, it's only fifteen bucks. You could probably still use them around the house for any and all yard work/ gardening/ chores....you get the idea.

Good luck.

Bought 'em.

They fit a lot better once I laced them up and my son seems to approve. I think I may have to get some black leather dye and re-lace them with para-cord though. They are a little too... dorky I guess is the word. My wife says they smell like old people.

Nice Mocs. Try Dyers and Arrow. N. Conway. My father grew up in Ossipee, and I spent my youth in Dunbarton. Shame about the Old Man of the Mountain.

those are worth alot more than 15$ bucks. what a score. my quoddy's were 300$ deerskin inner, grizzly skin outer and chromepak sole......ohhhhh yeah.

Well, I just wore them out for a few hours and they feel great. I usually have to get used to a shoe for at least a couple days but the mocs feel perfect already.
Tim, I looked at the Arrow website and they do look like the Bush Boot. If they are , it would seem I've picked up a $180 pair of mocs for $15! There are some differences I noticed, namely the color and the toe style. Would you happen to know if they offer(ed) different color styles etc?

I wore soled Minnetonka's daily for a few years when I was younger. Most of the time in them was in the woods.
They will stretch quite a bit both length-ways and across.
Moccasin's are very comfy and hold up quite well.

Since we are on the subject, I also got these from the lost and found at my work:

Not exactly woods-worthy but ridiculously comfy around the house.

I've been checking out the other Arrow stuff and I reeeeally need a pair of these for the winter:

It seems people have worn them to the North Pole.

Out of sheer boredom-fueled curiosity, I just searched around for the company that made the Mocs for the Hunted movie and found Catskill Mountain Moccasins. Having grown up in the 'skills, I was a bit interested... until I saw the price! $833 for these:

We'll probably see Justin Timberlake in a pair of those someday. :barf:

get 'em dirty, use neatsfoot oil, don't dye 'em.

you scored.

Roger that. Any particular reason other than the risk of messing up something nice?

I have worn Dyers for thirty years. Arrow is of the same quality. You did good on your buy. I am sure they were quite expensive. Just love the thrift stores. A year ago I picked up a pair of Russell snake boot for a buck. They run close to 500.00. I haven't had to use them yet. They look new. I bought them for the leather even if they didn't fit. They do fit. Just lucky I guess. Your mocs may stretch more as you use them to fit your foot after they get damp. Interesting toe.

The thrift store near me can be pretty amazing. Not too long ago, I bought a brand new and clearly never worn genuine Alpha flight jacket for around $35. This past trip, I also spied a pair of older but hardly used Herman Survivors. They were oxblood color with no wear on the soles and would be back to new condition with a quick polish. Unfortunately, they are 3 sizes too small for me.
Back on the Moccasins, I don't know how I missed the Mukluks on the Arrow site the first time. $225!!!!!1!! I guess I did score.

Yes you did. Good score for you.

Yeah, you win. Good score.

I have three pair of Poppins, hand made to my feet. Not cheap but great mocs, I had my first pair resoled about two years ago.

I was attending the Alafia River Rendezvous when Carl Dyer died, it was pretty sad he had a lot of friends. He put a lot of rendezvousers feet in his mocs.

blais you made the best buy i've seen in years. my last one was a canadian heavy goose down coat made in canada . even had soft leather lining in wrist cuffs & collarline. 25$

I wore them from 10am to just a few minutes ago and I have to say, without any hesitation, that these are the most comfortable pair of anything I have ever worn on my feet. I think the only thing I could hope to do to improve the comfort is a pair of Gel inserts (I have metatarsalgia in both feet from working on concrete floors). When I wear these out, I'll definitely be replacing them with another pair.

A modern pair of mocasins is made by Vibram, called The Five Fingers.

I love mine.

I've heard a lot about those and I've always wanted a pair. With the pain I have in my feet, I'm a little worried about not being able to put in an insole but I'll probably end up with a pair anyway. :D
