I found this Woodsman's Pal LC-14-B #284 in a steel sheath and something is not adding-up. The old guy I got it from said he picked it up at a local surplus store in the early 60s.

I've not been able to find a LC-14-B #284 other than two #284 examples with the same sheath but without the military LC-14-B designation.

I saw a couple with a 280 blade in a metal sheath with the leather handle stamped 284.

I'm thinking the #280 blade examples with the 284 stamped handles might have been the newer #284 model but Victor Tool used the 280 blades and marked the handles #284 till they were used-up.

I suspect this one was produced in the 1950s as they were still a .mil issue item.

Yeah, I know that's as clear as mud but as I can't really find any production history on the W.P. as to model numbers I hope someone can help me out.

Why are you concerned about it? You might post this in the hatchet forum.

LOL....Thanks for being so additive.

When I did a forum search most of the W.P. posts were in this sub-forum.

Not concerned but if someone knows a W.P. model # production time-line I'd like to know a bit more about it. After all this is a blade forum and a W.P. is not a hatchet, and while not a knife per-se it's a blade.

Can't help you much TrapDog, but I was issued a Woodsman Pal without the D handle, in 1970, USN. ( active 68 to 72) It did have a olive drab canvas sheath with a "bag snap attachment" with other goodies, igloo saw & scrapper, survival manual, handle with assorted blades, circular sharpening stone, and a magnify glass. I think yours is post Viet Nam era.

As best as I can tell they quit making the spring steel sheaths in the '50s.

I wonder then, when did they first come out, & where were they made ? I guess a Google search is a good place to start. :D
