Hello All,

I am not a knife maker nor do I even play one on t.v. Most of my work has to do with making scabbards (sword scabbards specifically). However, I have been known to try my hand and making a kit knife or two and lately I've had a hankering to try out working some bog oak into a project. A couple of quick and (I hope) easy questions.

1) Where should I go to get good quality bog oak? I see it all over ebay but it could be complete garbage for all I know. Are there other reputable sources?

2) Is working it in any way different than working other wood. Are there any particular things that I should be aware of or precautions safety wise?

Thanks!

I got my bog oak of ebay. Most I used was solid, one piece had a large crack on the inside, just bad luck.
Not all bog oak is black I've seen brown bog oak offered.
Make sure to arange the rays(tiger stripe) like normal oak in a optimal way.
Fill the pores and it is stunning. I love the stuff.

Like was said it varies in colour greatly from black to light brown and grey
Dust isn't toxic to me anyway
It cracks a lot when drying
As for sources when I want it I go to the bog and pull it out,Im in Ireland
That can be hit and miss tho
I can buy whole logs of trees for a couple of hundred in local classifieds
I see handle size pieces in most knife supply shops on line like brisa

I have lots of bog oak. I have some stabilized, which I like better than leaving it plain. If you just want to try playing with some, send me an email or PM and I'll send you a block or two.

Color ranges from black, to black with gray stripes (my favorite), to a greyish brown color.

It is high in silica, which makes it tough, but not dangerously to work on with normal PPE. Work it with fresh belt sand sharp tools. Don't get it hot when grinding and polishing. or it can crack.

Thank you for the replies all. Stacy, I'll hit you up, but you must let me pay for it. :)
I did try to send you a message but apparently your inbox is full.

Okay if I can just say Stacy is a very generous and kind gentleman. I asked the above question and I discovered yesterday that he had sent me a small priorty mail box full of bog oak and some beautiful maple. He didn't even let me pay for shipping. It's kindness and generosity like that, completely unasked for, that gives me some faith back in the human race. Thank you Stacy!

Stacy is one of the best guys around! I’ve seen him deal with allll kinda BS here yet he’s still the first one to open his mind, shop, supplies and wallet when someone needs help. Wish the world had more people like him. The mold was definitely broken after this guy was born!
