Back in January my father-in-law passed away, and like me, he was a knife nut. Recently, we received another shipment of items from the estate (my wifes mother is sending things to us when she can), and it was a good chunk of his knife collection. In the collection is his father's WWII Ka-bar. The sheath needs some loving and the blade as well, I can handle cleaning up and sharpening the blade, but I was wondering about preserving things.
I've read a lot about renaissance wax for preserving the blade, but I'm wondering if that will adversely affect the sheath or the wooden stand we plan to place it on (standard ka-bar display under glass) to place it with his flag and dog tags. I really want to do this right for my wife and to honor her father.
Anyone have any suggestions? Hints? Best practices? I haven't purposely preserved anything (except leftovers in the fridge).
Chris
