Wrought iron wagon rims

Just wanted to pass along something that I learned over the past few weeks. I have always been told that wagon rims were not made from wrought iron. Well, three weeks ago while I was passing thru MS, I came upon a recycling center that had about 18 of them stacked up. I bought a couple just on the chance that they were made out of wrought. Took them home, cut them and broke them apart. 100% wrought iron. I went back last week and bought the rest at a good price. So far, out of the 9 that I have cut up, 7 of them were wrought iron. Two of them are some type of metal that I just can not break easily and does not splinter like wrought. They range in size from 2 to 4 inches in width, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and the minimum length is 9 feet in diameter. I figure I have enough to last me for several years of forging, knife making, and giving some to friends. I would have included pictures so you can see what I am talking about. I just could not figure out how to do so. So, if you come across any rims from an old wagon wheel, start thinking outside the box and check it out. There are tons of wagon rims out there. Not everyone will be wrought iron, but it can not hurt to check it out. I now look at it as an available source that otherwise I would never have checked out.

great score let me know if you could spare some-no wagons wheels round here LOL-marekz

I will get with you on Sunday after I inventory it all. Today I am going to watch Jim Batson demonstrate. I am sure I got a few I can spare.:p

When checking wagon rims for wrought iron just look at how the rust has eaten them.If it is wrought iron the rust pits will look long and stringy, this isnt 100% all the time but it is over 75% correct...Watch around the old scrap yards for these.....But please dont steal any old ladies flower pots made from the rims,LOLOLOL

Hey Brian!!! I would be glad to buy some of it from you, Just let me know, Take care Hows Mike doing? Yall made any knives lately? You got to get him on here

Hey man. Mike is doing good. We made a couple of knives two weeks ago. I have been busy since then with school and all my scrounging up in MS lately. I will get with you guys on Monday once I finish finding what all I got and finish cutting up the rest. Saw Jim Batson give a demonstration today. That guy was surely in his element at a forge.

I hauled a wagon wheel all the way from Texas once that had the long stings of rust pits as Bruce described.Once I got it home and cut into it it turned out to be mild steel. But it was worth a shot anyway!

Like I said ....not 100% but a good starting point.....John,You need to come up for a visit if you need some wrought Iron..

Thanks for the offer Bryan, but I'm on the boat and won't be off for 3 more weeks. I work on the river , and I come through Baton Rouge quite often.
