Just wanted to pass along something that I learned over the past few weeks. I have always been told that wagon rims were not made from wrought iron. Well, three weeks ago while I was passing thru MS, I came upon a recycling center that had about 18 of them stacked up. I bought a couple just on the chance that they were made out of wrought. Took them home, cut them and broke them apart. 100% wrought iron. I went back last week and bought the rest at a good price. So far, out of the 9 that I have cut up, 7 of them were wrought iron. Two of them are some type of metal that I just can not break easily and does not splinter like wrought. They range in size from 2 to 4 inches in width, 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick and the minimum length is 9 feet in diameter. I figure I have enough to last me for several years of forging, knife making, and giving some to friends. I would have included pictures so you can see what I am talking about. I just could not figure out how to do so. So, if you come across any rims from an old wagon wheel, start thinking outside the box and check it out. There are tons of wagon rims out there. Not everyone will be wrought iron, but it can not hurt to check it out. I now look at it as an available source that otherwise I would never have checked out.
