So I just bought a Case Medium Stockman in Yeller Delrin, CV of course. Love the knife but the sheep's foot and clip blade have minimish (I know, it's not a real word) side to side blade play. The spey blade is fine. Is this normal or should I take it back and exchange it?

It is a matter of how you call "minimish"... how strong is the wobbling?

For sure, you could send it back... or try to repair it on your own way. I had the same problem some months ago with a GEC #73. So I made a thread here - here´s the link http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...C-73-and-blade-play-and-gaps-*Problem-solved*

Maybe it helps you for your own repair.

I´ve never had any warranty case with Case knives, so I can´t tell you about that. But in my thread, the member jacktrades_nbk had the a problem with a multibladed knife which he also repaired himself.

Hope that helps a little :)

I just checked my Case medium stockman. All solid but a little play on the clip blade.

I checked my Case large stockman. Only the Spey had play.

For grins, I checked my Old Timer stockman and all of the blades had play, each with worse play than on the clip of my Case medium or the Spey of my large Case stockman.

It doesn't bother me.

It used to drive me nuts when I had modern one-handed locking folders but that's more because those fulfilled a different set of expectations that for me was outside of any real world applications.

I accept a tiny bit of play on one-blade slipjoints and I am a little more generous with multiblade slippies.

Blade rub irks me but I find a small amount acceptable in multiblade patterns. If a single blade knife rubs the liners, that's a deal breaker, ladies.

I have a medium Stockman from the 90's, none of the blades have any play, but one of them does rub.

Blade play doesn't bother me too much on a $40-$50 traditional knife, but it really bothers me on modern, locking knives costing much more.

If you can really take it back and exchange it, that's what I'd do. In general I don't think a little play is the end of the world in a reasonably priced production knife. In my mind though, if it's already loose it'll only get looser with use.

I'm not a Cutler, but I don't believe any blade play on a new knife is "normal". I think a well made pocket folder should be tight from the get go and remain that way for many years of normal use. But thats just me.....

Well I went to go exchange it but every single one that I looked at to exchange it for had the same symptoms, some of them had even more blade play than the one that I was returning! I looked at ones with and I looked at ones without the punch. I ended up coming home with a large stockman in yellow Delrin... This thing is a beast but each blade is like of bank vault with no blade play what so ever.

Now you know what many here have said, they would prefer to handle a knife before they buy it.

But what a great remedy! You found a great large stockman, and it will no doubt serve you as long as you care to have it around. Those CASE large stockman knives can't be killed. I have one that my grandfather carried in the 40s, 50s, and part of the 60s. While it has a ton of miles on it, the knife still snaps closed and only has the normal amount of battle wear a 60 plus year old knife should have.

Good work on getting one!

I know the feeling, I've just go an old Case knife that was describe as firm, with noticeable blade play. For me this is a big turn-off. at first I was thinking of sending it back and get refund, but the I took my chance and fixed it. Well I am happy I did so. Now i have perfect Case XX barehead jack.
So why won't you do the same?
Mike

Mike I thought about fixing it but I shouldn't have to fix a brand new knife. So I went back to Smoky Mountain Knife Works and 10 minutes later walked out with my 3375. If the knife was used I would have went ahead and fixed it.
