YIM alternatives

As some may know the classic version of yahoo instant messenger is being turned off at the end of the month, and its new version supposedly leaves a lot to be desired.

Does anyone know of an alternative instant messaging program that's similar to the old YIM and allows for such things as colored texts and such?

Slack seems to have gotten a bunch of good reviews. Honestly, most people I know use WhatsApp or simply group text, depending on their phone and level of chattiness...

I was thinking more for home computer usage rather than cellphone usage.

I wish I could help you with this. I am a Mac user, and the only IM thing I use, is Messages.

Eons ago I used AIM, YM!, and another one, who's name is escaping me. If AIM (AOL's Instant Messanger) is still around, that one is pretty good, and I think you CAN export your YM stuff into it.

I don't know if they would work for you or not but have you looked into Trillian or Pidgin? They are "all-in-one" IM programs where you can use multiple IM programs. You just put in the log-in info and they should retrieve your lists and it will show if people are online, etc. I don't know if they offer colored text or some other features like that but you might try them and see.

Depends on your profiency, but we used Jabber for awhile and found it really nice. We now use Aim (Adium on Mac) and desktop hangouts.

You can also try ICQ or Skype, the former was very popular for the last 15 years and the latter along with other programs have taken it's place.
