Your favorite outdoors movies

One of the things I like to do when I'm camping or backpacking and hit some rain, is to hang my ipod from the ridgeline of my hammock, and lie back watching a movie while I wait to go to sleep. Now, normally, I'd much prefer to be out building a fire or interacting with nature, but when the weather turns to crap, sometimes I just need a distraction to keep me from going stir crazy.

So, if you were stuck in the woods in crappy weather, what movies would you want to have along with you? Would you want something outdoorsy like Into the Wild, or something with some good Zombie action to keep you alert at night? :D What movies would YOU take into the woods?

(and yeah, I know I'll get a bunch of replies saying that I should be leaving the technology at home and enjoying the escape to nature - what can I say? I'm a gadget geek and I like having something to keep me occupied when it's raining.

Movie? Woods?

There's no room for my LCD in my debris shelter, but I think if I could find an outlet i'd probably try.

Honestly, I love Into the Wild, Jeremiah Johnson etc.. But i'd more than likely bring some zombie movies.

Great question! This is a tough one, but I think that my picks would be:

"First Blood" (first Rambo movie)
"The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins (great survivalist movie)
"The Hunted" with Tommy Lee Jones (a little over the top, but hey its a movie!)

I also agree with 230grains about bringing some zombie movies, my choice would be:

"Zombie Diaries" (Probably the most realistic Z movie ever)
"28 Days Later" (Although not technically a zombie movie it still is lumped into this genre)
"Dawn of the Dead" (the first one, not the recent remake)
"Shaun of the Dead" (if you've never seen it, watch it, it is hilarious!)

What about yours MustardMan?

Going through what I generally bring:

Maxpedition condor II with 3 liter bladder.
Stainless cup for the fire
Multi purpose Bandana
Mora
Large Busse
Small pan or pot
Compass
First aid/suture kit
Handgun
Firesteel
Paracord
Warm clothing
Some kind of food, but usually we get some squirrel or some fish depending on where we are.

I don't have enough room for a tv/laptop. Entertainment? Throw some knives and tomahawks. My friend always brings a couple. Most importantly for entertainment, fire. I watch enough movies at home, I camp and hike to get away.

I agree with you 230grains. I watch enough movies at home and leave my iPod at least in the car. While in the wild I leave most of my tech at home, unless I am Bigfoot hunting. But these are the movies I WOULD think of bringing if I did want to watch some. If I had nothing to do but sit in my tent, I would bring a good book (probably zombie book like Day by Day Armageddon, World War Z or Zombie Survival Guide)

I wouldn't bring a TV or laptop, but I've always got my iphone, which can play movies, and often have an ipod too. Throwing hawks and sitting around a fire lose some of their charm when there's a torrential downpour - those are the situations where I'm likely to want to have a movie on me.

Edited to add: Books are my go-to standard right now, too, but I can sit side by side with my fiance and watch a movie together, while we can't share a book.

I don't have iPods, or other doodads to watch movies on in the woods (I spend too damn much money on knives and guns).

BUT. . .outdoors movies I like:

Last of the Mohicans
The Patriot (the Mel Gibson one, not the Steven Seagal one)
The Hunted
The Mummy (ok, more of a gun movie than an outdoors move)
Aliens (C'mon who doesn't like Aliens?)
I Am Legend

Too many Westerns to list.

I usually bring a book along. Something not too heavy (in more than one sense). I have a how to tie knots book that along with some cord is perfect for what you are describing!

 I can't believe "Red Dawn" hasn't been mentioned yet. Trucks, woods, hunting, commies, guns, code talk on the radio and a cameo twirling knife appearance. Pretty much everything you could want...all in a 114 minute flick.

Favorite outdoor movie... The Great Outdoors DUH!!! John Candy at his best if you ask me.

HAK
RP#354

The River Wild.

The Eiger Sanction

Any Clint Eastwood Western

Hatari!

Jeremiah Johnson. Outdoor movie with survival, drama, comedy, and BIG knives :D

Deliverance...

First thing that came to mind when I read the title.

gives "squeal like a pig" a new meaning on this forums

I've never brought a computer or dvd player camping (I bring a book), but it would probably be:

Descent
Ghost and the Darkness
Deliverance

In Harms Way and The Green Beret's... John Wayne

What was the name of that movie with John Wayne, it was about a plane that went down and they had to survive in the sub-zero temps?
