Well folks, it's that time of the year again! ;) I forget how many years I've been posting a KOTY thread now, but it's a fair few...so I'm quoting this from last year's thread, except for a change of year of course ;) If you've been on The Porch a while, you'll know the score. If not, please read the following few paragraphs carefully, and enjoy nominating your first Traditional Knife of the Year

In 2021, if you’re lucky, you may have bought, found, or been given, an EXCEPTIONAL knife. Maybe it was a knife you didn’t think was going to be that special, but it has absolutely CHARMED you. Perhaps it was an inexpensive knife, which you picked up somewhere, slipped in your pocket, and then found you couldn’t stop carrying it. It must be a knife you have gotten on or since Christmas Day 2020. If you’ve come across a knife like that, perhaps you’d like to nominate it as YOUR knife of the year.

Now, it could be that you’ve been perfectly happy carrying the knife you bought or were given many years ago, a knife which has served you so well, why would you want to change? If that’s the case, good luck to you my friend, but that knife doesn’t qualify.

It could be that you’ve had lots of knives this year, and liked many of them, but none of them really stood out. Don’t worry, maybe something will come along next year, which will absolutely knock your socks off. You can tell us about that knife next year.

Also, and we always get a couple of these, you may be one of those indecisive folks who just can’t make your mind up. Maybe you have two, or three, or four knives you really like, and can’t decide which you like the best. If that applies to you, feel free to start another thread, because if ONE of those knives doesn’t stand out, it doesn’t deserve to be nominated for this one. By all means mention a number of knives, but in the end, YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE. If you can’t…on yer bike! ;)

It gets worse, there’s no prize for this, and there’s no winner! :D We’re just talking knives, and telling each other which single knife has made all the difference to us this year :)

So, we're not looking for the fanciest custom you picked up this year, we're looking for a knife that you've CARRIED, that has absolutely hogged your pocket in a way which may have taken you by surprise. Don't worry if you can't choose one, you're not being asked to choose your favourite child, just sit back and read the posts, and maybe you'll find a knife to nominate next year

Sadly, 2021, has been another year dominated by Covid, and largely because of that, I haven't acquired anywhere near the number of knives I usually pick up.

A special mention must go to my two outstanding #86s, the first gifted to me by my pal Charlie waynorth waynorth :) It's definitely a strong contender for the best-looking knife I own :)

The other, of course, is this year's Traditional Forum Knife, which we ALL have to thank Charlie for, and, in my case, I have to thank r8shell r8shell , who very kindly shipped mine over :)

Both these knives have seen a fair amount of pocket time, but neither has come close to kicking my beloved Hartshead Barlow out of my pocket. No knife has ever come close to hogging my pocket like this one has, and I struggle not to carry it every day.

I've always loved fixed-blade knives, and I had this one forged, by a local maker, Jorgencraft, for my 60th birthday, earlier this year.

mbdmvNo.jpg

I'm very pleased with the work, and have another knife on order from the same maker, but I haven't carried the knife much yet...

But there is another knife... ;)

I haven't shown this knife much here, but I've used it a great deal, and thoroughly recommend it. It's a Hultafors Chisel Knife, tougher than old boots, and they cost barely anything. One of the things I've done during our repeated lockdowns is to make walking staffs/sticks, both for myself, my friends, and my friends' kids, and the chisel knife has been an able helper. It's been so useful, I don't even put it away, and I use it all the time. It arrived very sharp, keeps a great edge, and is easy to sharpen. There are plenty of videos online showing the knife in use, and you might want to take a look, because, whether you use it in the workshop, or take it out to the woods, this knife is a bargain, and a great user. The plastic sheath is practical, but won't win any more beauty contests than the knife will. I carry the knife in my side pocket, or in a vest pocket, and so the sheath is perfectly adequate. I've been so impressed with this knife that I've given several away to friends, and I'd give one away here, but they're widely available, and cost a fraction of the price of overseas postage.

So this year, my Knife of the Year is the Hultafors Chisel Knife

I'm looking forward to reading about YOUR Knife of the Year, and hope 2021 has been kind to you. Have a great Christmas everyone, and a Happy 2022

Jack

Like Jack, I slowed down this year and am just not buying as many knives as previously. But I do have several contenders for this year's nomination, which I will list in the order I obtained them.

In February I got this BladeForums Viper from Jeremy. I prefer the lighter ram's horn, and this allowed me to send my original darker one along to another blade brother. Shown here with its typical carry partner.

In March I was able to finish off my Cuban collection from Mike Latham, with each of the last two being only 1 of 2 made, in Good & Plenty Bone and Black Stag. Thanks again, Mike!

I'm a fan of Western fixed blades, and in April I won an auction for one of their top of the line WestMark hunters, the #702. It's not mint, but complete with all original packaging.

July brought me a hard to get Camillus #88 Lok-Rancher stockman. I'm a big fan of their Indian Stag jigged Delrin.

And finally, just last month Vince sold me this gorgeous Lloyd "Dino" in musk ox horn.

While all of these are special to me in some way, only one of them has had any meaningful carry and use, and it gets used A LOT. It has become my predominant "at home" carry, light and unobtrusive, yet completely capable.

My 2021 KOTY is my BladeForums Viper, which is in my pocket as I type this.

I do have a pocket hog (My Usual Lamb) and it takes a whole lot for a knife to kick it out of my pocket for any length of time.
I get bored and grab something else several times a day, but My Usual Lamb is a constant carry from day-to-day for several years now.
So, my Knife of the Year isn't a true pocket hog, but it is a knife that I find to be perfect in every way, and it was a gift from a valued forum member.
If it wasn't for my attachment to the Lamb, it would most definitely be a pocket hog. The shape, the size, the blades, the beauty... it's all just about perfect.

My Knife of the Year is the GEC #68 White Owl in Jigged Bone... Thank you Barrett btb01 btb01 for the wonderful gift.

Great stuff John, I'd somehow missed that your White Owl was a gift from btb01 btb01 :)
I hit the jackpot with this one. IMHO, the best knife of the run! It’s called the 2AC Barlow but I count 4 two on each side 😃.

Two other knives I should have mentioned in my opening post were the knife I won in glennbad glennbad 's giveaway earlier this year, which is a truly special knife

Also, this 1941 issue Joseph Rodgers British Navy Clasp Knife, generously gifted to me by H herder , to replace the one my grandfather gave me as a boy, and which I lost in about 1971

2021 has been another interesting year for me with regards to re-entering the traditional knife fold.

I still find Barlows, especially single-blade, to be my favorite pattern. Last years KOTY, the Boker Expedition Barlow, is still my favorite traditional.

I still really like Tribal Locks, and have acquired a couple more.

I discovered I can enjoy single-blade versions of Trappers and Copperheads, and have acquired a couple of those.

And then I grabbed a Tear Drop as a part of a small group of the Case Smooth Old Red Bone series with PVD blades. Tear Drops, to me, have always been an odd-looking pattern. After getting the SORB I realized they actually fit my hand well, had a pull that worked well with my current hand issues, had a very useable blade length (not too big, not too small) and the blade was a Zulu Spear variation (a favorite of mine). Things escalated rapidly from that point. I now have a good hand + of Tear Drops.

Since I began acquiring this pattern, I've noticed I have been reaching for a Tear Drop to toss in a pocket almost as much as my Expedition Barlow. I like each version I have, for various different reasons. There is one that feels more like a working knife IMHO, and the type of knife I'm less likely to worry about damaging the beautiful handle materials. And I have found this one knife making its way into my pocket almost as much as my Barlow.

My 2021 KOTY is...
original.jpg

Case Rustic Red Richlite Tear Drop, with the brown/ chocolate/ red Richlite handles.

The first time I saw a muskrat (it was a strawberry bone Rough Rider) I thought it was a weird pattern, but somehow it also had a mysterious appeal, so I bought it. Well... This year I bought my sixth muskrat. I find all of them delightful to hold and carry, but this one is extra beautifully done and gives me a thrill every time I pick it up and put it in my pocket: 130th anniversary Case muskrat in golden aged antique bone with Roman numeral shield marked CXCASEXX (a clever combination of Case, XX, and CXXX).

I have gotten some awesome knives this year, including a Latreille with warthog ivory handles, a pair of Gec 86 2 ABs, the 2021 forum knife, and a Böker swell-end jack (among others). The one that just ticks all of the boxes for me, though, is this Charlie Bell in European red deer stag. I received it in February and it has been in my pocket almost daily since. I still have at least one more coming (a GEC White Owl), but I have a hard time imagining that it will overtake this sowbelly!

I’ve acquired many great knives this past year. Some I bought myself and with the help of others, some I traded for, and others were gifts. A few that come to mind and are on the short list are: My first TC Barlows and the White Owl, some Case chestnut and stag small Texas Jacks, and several Bokers including Boys knives (Prime Barlow) and regular Barlows. But there is one that tops them all for me. It was actually the very first knife I bought in 2021. I carried it all the time and posted many pictures of it, especially during the Buccaneer’s Super Bowl run. I don’t post as many pictures of it as I did but it is either in my pocket or my “box” nearly everyday.
Single carbon steel blade…check. Burlap Micarta…check. Threaded satin bolsters…check. Sunken joint…check. Impeccable F&F…check. Fantastic action…check.
How could it NOT be my KOTY.

I bought a handful of knives this year, but I think that out of all the knives I've acquired in 2021 this Russell green river blade I bought from Jantz probably stands out the most.

It turned out better than I imagined it would, and it's just a real joy to use.
For daily utility to food prep and eating a nice steak it excels at it all.
That is aside from the tasks where a little pocket knife blade is most appropriate.

Great annual Thread, Jack Black Jack Black !! It is fun to see the knives my fellow Porchenbergers treasure!!
Several knives have again marched into, and through my life this year. Many go straight to the safe, some try my pocket out for a time, like this wonderous Sfilato from Rhidian Rhidian , a cross-pollinated ethnic design, produced by this local knifemaker with prodigious talent!! He extracted the beauty from an antique gift from r8shell r8shell !!Sfilato Comp 1.jpg
It has sliced tomatoes, and Soppresatta for lunch with aplomb!!
But when all is said and done, the knife that wins my pocket again and again, is the Barlow, you might say designed (and modelled after) a/by New York Knife, and exquistely reproduced in 2012 by my friend, and wizard, Bill Howard!!🧙‍♂️
Behold, old Boiley!! My Knife of the Year!!Boiley again 1.jpgBoiley July 2020.jpg

It might have been the green one.
L26gsAr.jpg

And I love the BF21.
But the copperhead was a whole new pattern for me, and I got two fine examples of the robust, new-to-me pattern. I'll choose the black and stainless one for knife of the year, because it was the first one, and because I secretly like stainless.

I generally loathe acronyms...but this one is ok...KOTY...knife of the year right?...usually they're used by politicians or fire brigade trainers to baffle everyone and make themselves seem more intelligent and up to the minute...it doesnt work.
The Swiss are brilliant at making knives...and sewing machines and clocks apparently ...but their crowning glory must certainly be .....featured here with KOTY...

Im a sucker for Ox horn..this Well worn JMilner has a place on my coffee table ...still has SLBs *

Snappy Little Blades.

Cheers and Happy Xmas.

My KOTY is a Trapper. What else would it be? For this year, it's a 1991 reproduction Remington R1178 Mini Trapper serial #4123 with superbly done jigged bone covers. I've chosen to display it on and in it's box. What swayed it for me is it's Muskrat blade - hubba, hubba!!

Two of my favorites I’ve picked up this year are a Case Barlow (pictured with my Vic Cadet)
BlD5aUe.jpg

and a Case 6344 stockman (also pictured with my Vic Cadet.)
P9G02mc.jpg

But my knife of the year has to be that simple little Victorinox Cadet - a Christmas gift from my daughter last year. I put it in my pocket Christmas morning and it’s been there every single day since. I usually have another knife along with it, but the Cadet is always there. It’s so useful and so unobtrusive (especially after I performed a nubectomy) there’s just no reason not to have it along. (Photo from last Christmas, before the nubectomy.)
