Yugo M48 bayonet?

I'm deciding between a butterfly or an M48 bayonet.I'm in high school, but i dont really have a job, so i cant have both. I'm just wondering how the blade on the M48 is. Is it as good as german mausers? Also, anyone know the approximate time the manufactured M48's? All i know is M48's are basically 98k's with shorter barrel or something like that.

What kind of Butterfly knife are you looking at? I think you will get alot more fun and utility out of a decent butterfly knife than you will with a bayonet- unless you choose to use it as a thrower, and it wont be useful for anything else, such as cutting. The Bayonet is probably alot cheaper, however.

I would steer clear of that knife, it isnt going to be even halfway decent. You would have to spend nearly 10 times that amount to get a quality butterfly knife. If you want a good, full tang bayonet that can be used for throwing, I recommend this one:

it is also cheaper than the M48, I think.

Just dont expect to cut anything with it, bayonets are only good for stabbing.
if you want a decent butterfly knife, you might take a look at the Spyderfly from spyderco, it is less expensive than most other quality butterfly Knives, but alot more than the one you were looking at.

edit: without the frog the SIG Bayonet is even cheaper:

Well, im kinda on a budget, more or less, 20 bucks. I'm new to knives so i dont really need a quality one. I just want one to mess around and stuff, no real practical use. That yugoslavian bayonet on the site you showed me is the bayonet im looking at. Im thinking about getting that and a cheap butterfly, since im new to flipping.

The bayonet that came with my Yugo M48 is a good stabbing implement, but has a horribly thick, obtuse edge that makes it a very poor cutting implement. It just depends what you want to do with it.

If your budget is around $20 and you want something you can use, take this advice. Get an Opinel folder and a Frost's of Sweden Mora. You will get a folder and a fixed blade, for around $20 for BOTH. That's right, each one will cost you around $10. Do a search here on those knives. They are very well regarded as users. They outcut knives many times their cost. They are solid, simple and reliable. They will be the most value for your money.

M48 was indeed German Kar98 (-alike) in Yugoslav service; the bayonet was allegedly a hefty (long) piece, take-off design (unlike the newer post-WW2 also semi-auto rifle design of 7.62 calibre which used some sort of "folding" bayonet type, unlike the 7.9 mm M48 bayonet). I am being told it was a high quality piece of steel - given the time it was manufactured in, easily on par with anything in the same area produced afterwards.

You surely you realize steel production advanced a great deal since then but it it's a decent piece. Rare ? Depends on where you live :) They're certainly more rare than your average el cheapo balisongs. You should decide what exactly you're looking for - a bayonet isn't exactly a camping knife; it's to cumbersome. It's considerably stronger than a butterfly though.

I dont need it for practicality. I just want it for like show or something. Personally, it looks nice, and i think im gonna get the M48 along with a cheap butterfly.

If anything, i'd throw it once or twice. Mainly, i want a bayonet because i'd like that metallic sound when you pull one out in the movies. Does pulling a bayonet out of a metal scabbard really make that sound?

Well, there's not anything to choose there then, is it ? Bayonet it is if you decided to get one. I've thrown M70 bayonet on a couple of occassions when I was a kid and it was quite heavy; I'd imagine M48 bayonet would be considerably heavier, judging by the description I was given.

Heyas, how you doin.

Form what i read here, i am little worried about your intentions, But it is not my place to lecture.

If you get the M48, Dont leave home with it unless camping or hunting.
Leave it at home going out with friends, out to pool hall, soda shop ect.. Resist the temptation to pack it,always.

This puts it under a different light. i am sure it doesnt sound good to you my friend at your age, but last thing you need early in life, is knife troubles abroad.

A butterfly, i can not see the usefullness of this knife for anyone myself, the aura that surrounds them is not a pretty one either imho.
Imagine what your local authorities what would think if it was found in your possesion during any kind of offence.

My advice freind, buy a good stout locking folder, care an maintain it for a year, then move up from there.

I said good as a cheap unit ,may take your fingers off.

Also, a small folder is acceptable to pack with you in most circumstances, maybe not school or the bar, but most else goes.

Sorry to sound like some ol granpa bud, just i love knives too, and there is definately a place for them in this world, when used properly, and improperly theres a nice small grey room for the others that dont.

Grandpa over, WR returning.

For the prices you mentioned, a Buck 110 is a great knife.

Peace, and good luck with whatever you do choose.

To my understanding the yugo mausers and equipment were made on german dies and from german parts. After WWII the factories that the nazis had in other countries were confiscated and the parts were used. This happened particularly in yugoslavia where they had a large factory. The parts that were left, wer used by the yugoslavs and parts that were needed were made from the german dies and leftover parts. They should be comparable in quality.

Now the bayonet, will have a thick edge and will need allot of reprofiling if it is to be used to cut with.

Yes i know im young. I live in cali, so even a folding knife is too much here. My high school will arrest you for posession of a screwdriver. Weapons laws are very strict here. Hell, the police station is right across the street from the school. Trust me, its a good enough deterrent for me to not bring knives to school. I have no intentions of bringing it outside my house, other than my backyard. Its just more or less to have to look pretty and so on. Maybe to put on my airsoft guns or something, but nothing big.

Awesome Mofo,
Sorry if i came across wrong to you there, it appears you took that well.

So what did you decide on man?

WR

Ah Mofo, my heart goes out to you. Back in the early 60's I used to freely wander the hills west of Pasadena and the adjacent suburbs with a P14 Enfield bayonet strapped to my waist (I was about 14 at the time). A mere 17-inch blade which I honed to shaving sharpness. My hiking buddy would have his similarly sized machete on his belt. On a weekend it was pretty common to pass through the local elementary school grounds so equipped. Sometimes idiots would say the usual, "whatcha gonna do with that, kill someone?" But we knew enough not to even draw our short swords to show them off when unreliable people were around and we had a legitimate explanation for what we planned to use them for--cutting brush in the hills.

I think my bayonet cost something like $4.00, complete with steel trimmed leather sheath. My friends and I bought a lot of bayonets and machetes. They all came very dull. I bought a 12-inch mill bastard file for reprofiling and sharpening the edges of those. It is a lot easier to sharpen a bayonet with a file than other knives since the steel is softer (usually close to 50 RC).

For years I used a blade cut off of a Mauser bayonet as a throwing knife. I found it to be extremely tough.

Anyway given the political and legal climate you won't be able to go outside your yard with a bayonet. You may not even be able to legally purchase the bayonet. When I was in my early teens I had to talk my parents into purchasing all of my guns and knives. That takes a special trust. You really need to run your plans past your parents if you want to avoid big problems. I was lucky since my parents were raised on farms. You should have a reasonable use for your knives worked out before talking to your folks. If they just find you practicing bayonet drill in the backyard without warning they may try and send you to a shrink. Keep your parents' trust and you can have a lot more fun.

Well, my parents dont get a lot of things it do. Sitting on te computer all the time, video game, and so on. They dont mind my airsoft guns much anways. They trust me, and dont really mind. I guess california isnt the way it used to be anymore. I live near pasadena too, so i understand how its like.

War Raven, i guess im gonna go with the yugo M48. It has that classic mauser look without the price tag. Anyone know if eknifeworks.com is a good retailer?
