The active pen thread got me thinking about the F-701 I recently picked up, specifically modifications for it.

A google search shows many are replacing the 701's plastic clicky with the metal clicky from the F-402.

Also, there are some using the Fisher Space Pen refill in their 701.

Has anyone here done anything like this? How did you go about it?

Any other mods that can be done with this pen?

Will the urge to hot rod everything ever go away?

I really like the pen with the metal clicky, but the metal one lost its chrome finish fairly quickly,(a few months) and turned brassy. I also had a hard time getting the clickies off without nicking the base.

The F-301 and F-402 are fine for me as is. No I'm not going to soup them up !!

I recently 'pimped' my 701 with 402 hardware, and it was totally worth it. I replaced the metal clickie, pocket clip, and the nosecone with parts from a 402, and it really improved the look and feel of the pen.

I don't like the tip of the F-402 installed on the F-701. It seems to leave a sharp edge of the knurled section exposed.

There's some mechanical pencil mods. The M-402 pencil components will fit if you like a fixed sleeve, and for a retractable sleeve, the pencil component from the cheaper Sharbo series will work if you cut some tube for a lead reservoir. The Sharbo X pencil component might also work, and can be ordered cheaply and separately.

Of course, there's going to be a new M-701 .7mm mechanical pencil, so the pencil mods might not be worthwhile.

There is a way to get it to work without pulling out the spacer, but this way is much easier in my opinion. Just poke, twist, and pull.

i wonder if the new M-701 can be given the same treatment.

I did the 402 trick to my 701. I just heated them up a little with a lighter, they came right appart with no problems.
