Hello all, my Zippo Blu in Dusted Chrome arrived today in the mail, it's beautiful, and I promptly went to the local tobacco shop and bought a bottle of the Zippo Butane. And I filled it up, with 3 pumps of 5 seconds each, as the manual suggested.
Well, the fluid ran out real quick, and the flame was rather weak.
Now I've been filling this bugger up for a while, but I can barely read the fuel gauge, and don't know when to stop! The fuel level in the gauge changes if I shake it a little, so I have NO idea how much is in here.
The flame is much bigger and stronger now with all this fuel in here, BTW.

How do I know when to stop filling?! And how long does a full fill last you guys and how fast do you go through the big(4.5oz/127g) bottle of butane fuel?

I fill any butane appliance until it can't take any more (ie: you hear a large hiss and a cloud of vapor appears at the filler)

thanks spidyman...and no dano, but i do carry a kershaw blur, so it's all good.

any blu owners - is there relatively no resistance whatsoever when you close it? I've been playing around with it, and suddenly the closing resistance just got hell of a lot less. I mean i prefer it with zero resistance like it is now but i'm a little worried at the same time b/c it happened suddenly in one flip, not like a gradual thing.

If you're trying to fill it, make sure that the chamber's completely empty before doing so. Purge the remaining butane by using a thumb tack or some other pointy object and insert it into the filling chamber, pushing lightly. Once it stops hissing, fill. Then comes the waiting game. You're not supposed to try and start it for about five to ten minutes, so it can warm up to room temperature. Once that's good and done with, it should be fine.

i bought one last fourth of july. it was a waist of money personally. i had all the same problems and i stopped using mine. found a rather old zippo in a junkyard not too long ago and got it working. looks better than the blu and actually works! ill stick with wick lighters from now on.

i bought one too. same problems. weak flame, misfires, etc.

ill stick with my brunton or a bic.

Purging the chamber does help somewhat. But IMO the Zippo Blu's are junk. And I live in Bradford, PA, Zippo's hometown. I was able to acquire one at the employee pricing. I believe I paid about $20 for the one I got. I feel ripped off. I can't imagine how it feels to spend $40 or more for one and realize what garbage it is. I am all for supporting American made products and all but it is really hard to recommend a Zippo Blu when you can go down to Walmart and spend $3 on a Ronson butane lighter that is way better in quality and user friendlyness.

Bottom line if you want a lighter and a Zippo purchase the classic Zippo. It is an awesome product that has stood the test of time. If you're looking for another type of lighter then Zippo is not the way to go in my opinion.

The old ones are the way to go. With a wick and lighter fluid, not butane. IMHO.
Coincidently, I have an older zippo up for trade in the exchange section....

I fondled one for a bit and decided to stick with the old on. If I want something with a butane flame I'll go get a mini soldering torch.

The standard style is more reliable, and doesn't require holding down a button to make it work. :)

Good old cheapo Bic lighter for me!

Works fine when I need it, and if the thing dies I just dig around in the nearest couch till I find another.

But I'll say this, if your going to get a zippo I'd stick with the tried and true classic over the Blu.

+1 on the Bic. Everyone should have these in the backcountry on their person. Did you see "I Survived" show where the snowboarder took his matches from the plastic bag only to have them fail. It cost him both of his feet. Bic's are what $2.-- each buy some.

Get a Xikar torch. They are guaranteed for life and work flawlessly. I have the "Plunge" model and I love it. Knifecenter has almost all models in stock. Plus, if you are a cigar smoker they are a must. Any cigar shop will carry them and their lifetime guarantee states that you can return it to any dealer for a new one if it breaks, so no wait having to mail it in.
