ZT/0470: Couple of questions

I managed to strip the 3 pocket clip screws on a ZT 470. Seems this model had some heavy lock tight on the hardware..

Anyone w/ any experience taking this model apart? Saw one disassembly vid that didn't show the clip/hardware removed..Looks like one long female screw on one side of the clip..Can this be removed w/ out talking the knife apart/pivot out? Is the long female screw keyed or shoulder'ed..should it push out? Seems to just spin.

I've placed an order w/ ZT for the screw set. New to the brand and wondering how well ZT responds to these requests via Email.

Any insight would be most appreciated.

Mods, if this is in the wrong sub, apologies and please move..

Thanks in advance..

Hey man,

I don't have any advice when it comes to this particular model but I do have some overarching/general truths to share...

I've had my fair share of locktite issues and I've found that utilizing a blow dryer/very hot water (depending on the situation...) works for loosening the locktite. As far as the model specific questions go....I can't assist.

I doubt you'll have issues sending the knife in/receiving hardware. ZT has been pretty good about that in the past. In my case at least.

I requested clip screws (0609) from ZT last month through their online form. It took them about a week to reach my mailbox.

Thanks reply and advise..Glad to hear good on ZT CS.

Yea, I put a soldering gun on the screws..had been aware of this issue..managed to maul the lower clip screw completely. Thing is practically welded in..but, completely my fault.

I've marred screws before..changed many a pocket clip. I've never seen a set up like this..a female/long screw..not sure how/if possible to remove w/ out taking the whole knife down..I just want to change the pocket clip, love the way it's set up now..flips great, centered solid..

Rather not send it in to ZT..getting this screw out is becoming battle..can't find my "easy out's"..not sure I had that size anyway..May file/dremel a slot..I hesitate.

Send it in before you dremel anything. Wouldn't want to void your warranty. I'm all about DIY but in this instance, I'd cede.

Right on. Thank you

That 609 is on my list.

I'm hoping I'll get the three screws for this set up and not just the two on the clip side...the CF/show side screw is the one that I can remove (the male)..The female/clip side just spins..can't seem to remove it from tbe body..

What kind of tool are you using? Get wiha bits if you use a cheap torx it will strip the head beyond repair.

Completely forgot to mention this but 100% agree with this suggestion. Wiha bits are GTG....cheap bits will absolutely cause stripping.

Personally I’ve had better luck with hairdryers than soldering guns...but then again my wife’s hairdryer is akin to one’s average flame thrower.

Are the screws T6? One time I buggered up a T6 but managed to get a decent fit (through trial & error) with an allen wrench. I figured I had one shot, so I got the knife hot as HE**. Just when I thought all hope was lost, the thing popped and I was able to unscrew it.

The answer is usually quality tools and more heat. :)

This is right, I know..but, you know..honeymoon phase, hate to see her leave so soon, for so long..haha. Kidding but not really. And I'd hate for it to come back and go through the same thing..

I destroyed two Chapman T6 bits..and I got revenge by using a cheap bit to basically drill the center out of the head..

I'm shopping for a new set now..Looking hard at the Wiha's..thanks.

Wihas are my go to high quality bit. I can also say for certain that there are multiple custom makers that suggest them as well. Buy Wiha.

As for the knife...I know that it sucks but it's better to skip the honeymoon and keep the relationship in tact than to divorce right away....right?

I thought I should use the hair dryer..didn't want to listen to it..or go dig it out..lazy. but, thought that would have been better/easier way to apply heat..

I tried other sizes/config of bits..all good quality..then used a cheap bit to finish her off..

Agreed on the Wiha..

Well stated on the rest, sir..I know this..just needed to hear it.

Thank you

Wiha stubby hex driver + Wiha insert bits is the best way to go. That way *when* you *still* destroy a T6 Torx Align head it’s $2.. not $15...

That's what worked for me, I don't recall having to heat the pocket clip screws but I did have to scorch the crap out of the pivot, they definitely weren't stingy with the loctite.
