Question - if anyone knows the answer, or knows where to get an answer.

Regarding the soon-to-be-released ZT0909 - I truly like the design of this knife, the contour of the grips/handle and the blade shape.

HOWEVER - all the specs I have seen so far have it weighing in at 7.5 OUNCES!!!!

Someone tell me it cannot be! (My Microtech D.O.C.'s don't even weigh that much!!)

Does anyone have a TRUE spec on this knife?

Thanks BF members in advance

Those are the specs direct from the manufacturer, so I can't imagine production weight will be much different. It's gonna be a heavy sucker.

Honestly it seems that it really is that heavy from what I can tell. They keep selling the idea of "extra thick liners" as a big thing for this knife, which seems to have made it a very heavy knife from what I can tell. It is also a 3.8" blade, and a rather large handle, so I guess the "extra thick liners" and the heft of the blade itself have probably made it a little past "hefty"...

They seem to be very hesitant to tell us if the liners are titanium or steel, so I would guess that they're steel with how heavy the knife is overall, and they probably have little to no skeletonizing done to them as well.

Pretty sure the liners are steel. They've repeatedly mentioned that it is essentially the replacement for the ZT 0200 and that beast was even heftier than 0909 is supposed to be.

Kind of what I thought too.

Honestly I think it's pretty stupid that they're still pushing the "extra thick liners" as a key feature. Honestly, no one needs a steel liner lock with like a 3mm thick liner...

Agreed.

Way too heavy to be considered. A shame really, it is one of ZT's better designs.

If most of the weight will be in the liners couldn't you just drill a bunch of holes in them to lighten it up?

MicroTech DOC has aluminum handles, 3.75" blade and weighs 7.17 ounces!

ZT 0909 has extra-thick stainless steel liners, 3.8" blade and weighs 7.52 ounces. It's a tank!

Yeah, it really sucks for me. Weight isn't usually a big issue for me, but frankly what this one is, I'm going to have to hold one in my hand and at least see if the weight is well-deserved and if the knife carries it well before I ever consider buying one.

Sometimes a heavy knife gets away with feeling lighter than it is with good balance and ergos, and I kind of hope this one is no exception, because I really do love the look of it, and I LOVE Les George designs. I've already come way too close to buying a Talos several times, and I still might, but this was a great way to get something a little more affordable.

I also hope ZT cuts it out with their ridiculously strong detents on flippers for this one...my finger would appreciate it greatly. My 0392 left my finger very sore when I was breaking it in, and now it's kind of ruined the knife for me.

Have you checked out the Florian Kona folder? It's quite different, more of a production take on the VECP, but if you dig the Les George designs that one is a bit smaller and significantly lighter than the 0909. No idea on the overall quality, but I've looked very hard at their Vorax fixed blade (another George design) as a way to dip my toe into fixed blade EDC.

I always find threads griping about weight to be fascinating.

People acting like they can feel a half an ounce difference in their pocket.

It all depends. At 7.52 ounces the weight of the 0909 is a lot more than a half an ounce difference if you're used to carrying folders weighing 4-5 ounces. It also depends on what else you carry, that is, keychain, flashlight, pen, wallet, etc. Grams add up to ounces...

My two current EDC folders are Todd Begg Steelcraft Kwaiken with a 4" blade weighing 4.96 ounces and Guardian Tactical Helix Nano with a 3.1" blade weighing 3.74 ounces.

When I pick my wife up, I can tell if she has gained .5 oz. Back to the gym babe!

Anywho.... My favorite edc is the 562CF, which specs at 5.5 oz. One of my more significant pocket weights. So two more ounces would be over a 36% increase. Personally I think that would be noticeable. But to those that are used to, and like heavier knives, it's certainly not sky high out there. But I've just got so much g10 already, and I'm not an outdoor knife beater, so I've got my eye's on a couple of the other new releases. Specifically the 804CF, 450CF, and 220. I noticed that the 220 and 456 are quite heavy also (6.2 & 6.6 respectively).

I understand, I was referencing a specific kind of person who is so inflexible in their weight standards, they miss out of great stuff.

It's okay though because they are usually nutnnumbnuts followers.

I think anyone who has ever carried a 0350/0560/0550 will carry a 0909 just fine. Anyone who ever carried a 0200 or 0300 will wonder if they forgot to put a knife in their pocket.

I never get it either. I carry my Benchmade 531, ZT 0200, and everything in between without an issue. A few days ago I was carrying my ZT 0550 Gen 1 in suit pants, just resting in that little pouch sewn into the bottom of the pocket with no issues.

Depends on how you carry. In work pants or jeans I'm comfortable with anything up to and including a CS Rajah 2. When I used to wear scrubs for work, however, anything over 4-5oz became extremely noticeable and annoying.

Honestly, I look at weight a lot like price. I don't want a knife that's expensive for the sake of being expensive or heavy for the sake of being heavy, but if I get enough in return I'll happily deal with either one. Others have a hard limit on how much of either they're comfortable with.

I will say, the ZT offerings don't do much for me, but if weight is an issue the 0452CF and 0804CF both give you a ton of knife for not a lot of weight.
