It's in post #20, former thread title: "Do you want to help me write a song?"

I want it to be about knives. If you want to help this thread will be the brainstorm session. I’ll take ideas from here but I won’t necessarily disclose what makes the final cut until I actually release the song. I’m going to publish it for free. Maybe before Christmas. Maybe in 2025, who knows. But it will be a video with me singing it (I’m not a good singer as I’m out of practice but I’ll practice for this song).

Any bladeforums members interested in contributing instrumentation can let me know and we’ll collab on that as well by PM, email, text or phone. Otherwise it’ll just be me and my guitar and maybe a MIDI band.

Just and idea at this stage. Slow burn project so no rush.

Haha well I don’t think we’ll be getting that specific. More of a song about the good of having a knife on hand and such. And not from a self defence perspective. Felt I should mention that up front.

just a song

I’m no lyricist, so I won’t be much help. But you could mention blades harder than stone, they don’t travel alone. And of course them BF boys and their drawers full of toys. Doc Jekl ‘specially, he don’t travel lightly. Hey, I’m reaching here, I know.

Take inspiration from a song that mentions a Randall knife, forget the title, probably has the word Randall in it. Maybe use the idea of a bum or hobo or cowboy or gaucho cutting up his meal or preparing the asado for a traditional beef BBQ. Just a few ideas. ;)

Just listened to the song in the video, so much more powerful to hear it rather than just read the lyrics. When my dad passed away we were cleaning out the old house for sale I picked up his Camillus Boy Scout Reproduction camper knife from his dresser drawer, glad I did, sentimental reasons but also because he was an Eagle Scout back in the the 40s, he was proud of that fact.

Not to take this too far off track, but man, I could relate to that song. My dad had such a slow decline, I felt like I had lost him before we actually did. It wasn’t until I was cleaning his old Colt 1911 that I finally had a good cry. Funny how an object can hold so much history.

Nope. Sorry space ghost, those are scissor sounds. Otherwise you were onto something.

I suggest for inspiriration listening to..
Frankie Lane, Bowie knife
Manowar, Power of my sword, lol
A knife is one of mankinds oldest tools ....it can create or destroy,
Save a life, or take one,
But has no power save the hand that weilds it.
It can be many things,
A expression and embodiment of skill and artistry. A infinately complicated mix of myth, mettallurgy, heat treatment, and function. Or just a simple tool that we all use everday.

So I kinda went my own way with it. Not sure if or when I'll be ready to sing it in front of y'all, but here is what I came up with:

Dear smith, you made many, many folding knives,
I realize, of course, that it's no shame to be foldable.
But it's no great honor either!
So, what would have been so terrible if I had been a fixed blade?

If I were a fixed blade,
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
All day long I'd cut chop and baton.
If I were a full tang blade.
I'd have no fear to work hard.
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum..

If I were a bitty bitty fixed,
Never folding never idle blade.

I'd build a big bonfire with logs by the dozen,
Split down the middle every one.
A fine steel wedge with sleek handles to adore.
There would be one long liner just going up,
And one even longer coming down
And one mosaic pin, as well, just for show.

I'd fill my pockets with keys and coins and bills and cards,
For my own EDC loadout to use.
Rustling just as noisily as they can.
And each loud "jingle" and "jangle" and "clink" and "clack"
Would land like a cymbal like on the ear,
As if to say "Here lives no folding knife."

If I were a fixed blade,
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
All day long I'd cut chop and baton.
If I were a full tang blade.
I'd have no fear to work hard.
Shivy divvy divvy divvy divy divvy divvy dum.
If I were a bitty bitty fixed,
Never folding never idle blade.

I'd see my boss, my owner, use me like a useful tool
With a proper grip and care.
Breaking up hard woods to heart's delight.
I'd see him cutting stuff up and conquering obstacles.
Oh, what a helpful mood he's in.
Separating matter, day and night.

The most important tasks in life would rely on me!
They would ask me to slice through,
Like a skilled blade in action.
"If you please, trusty knife..."
"Pardon me, handy knife..."
Solving problems that call for a sharp stout blade!

And it won't make one bit of difference if I'm stainless or carbon.
When you're practical, they know you're good to go!

Maker who crafted the blade and the handle,
You designed me to be what I am.
Would it spoil some vast eternal plan?
If I were a fixed blade knife?
