I assume it would be related somehow to a coping saw in function, but perhaps someone could enlighten me as to what the purpose of a coping blade is?

I like this type of blade. Great for whittling (especially in a high relief with a sharp drop.) Good when you need to cut a straight line and do not need a point to pierce with. I used one this weekend to trim and sqare up after using a chisel to install a deadbolt in a door frame.

Gus is right. They are great for precision whittling. I carry an old Camillus Carpenter's Whittler sometimes, and that pattern has a coping blade.

I believe they were also used to scribe a line on a piece of wood to mark a place to cut, or whatever needed marking.
