I have one of the Solo headlamps and was suprised to see an advertisement for the new Matrix which is said to get 40 hours of burn time of an akaline battery and 100+ off of a lithium battery.

Any idea whether this would be brighter than halogen or much weaker?

Much weaker. The Matrix has 3 white diodes. So it will be about as bright as LEDTronics 3CW. It also comes with a regular halogen bulb assembly. I'm thinking of getting one.
