A few select pictures from Enduring Freedom

Maurice,
I was a loader before becoming an aerial gunner. It used to be that only loaders could be gunners, but that changed a little over a year ago. To start out, you would go to Enlisted Aircrew Undergraduate Course at Sheppard AFB, TX. This is a 3 week academic course that is sort of a weed out course to see who really wants to be a flyer. Then you go to Underwater Egress (helicopter dunker) Training at one of several locations. This is a one day class with a swim test as well. After that, you go to Water Survival in Pensacola, FL. This is a week long paid vacation at the beach. Parasailing and some other fun stuff takes place here. Then you go to Land Survival/SERE Training at Fairchild AFB, WA. This is 2 1/2 weeks of learining to survive and return from captivity with honor. Pretty hard stuff. From there you go to Kirtland AFB, NM for Basic Aerial Gunner Class where you learn all the academic stuff of being a gunner. After the BAG, you then are split up to the different airframes you might be assigned to: MH-53J PaveLow, HH-60G PaveHawk, or the AC-130 Spectre. The helo guys get their initial flight training at Kirtland whilst the Spectre guys go to Hurlburt Field in FL. Upon completing your Initial Qualification training, you then go to your assigned unit for your mission qual training. Then you are a full up Mission Gunner. The AFSC is 1A7X1 if you are interested. All the recruiters should have some information and if you want, email me at ryan.renuart@nellis.af.mil and I'll send you a "gunner recruiting commercial" via email. Then I'll be happy to answer any more questions. Also a Class III flight physical is required.

Hi knifebomber,
Thanks for the reply. I have searched high and low on the army's website for this kind of MOS but have not been able to find one. Then low and behold there it is,on the AF site. It sounds like a great opportunity. Having fun at work, but also working hard.
thanks for the help. this thread is now one of my bookmarks.

...Ya just gotta love Ryan's job and pics, but he just may get his ass shot at...(Well, at least he can shoot back, "Good on ya KB!")

But, if ya want a safe, cushy, USAF MOS, pick the one I did, '305x4, Computer Systems Repair Specialist'...I spent 3 years soaking up the sun down at Eglin AFB, Ft. Walton Beach, FL., working 2nd shift... :D

Hanging out on the beach during the day, surfing with the babes, loving the Florida sun, and working short evenings...ahhh, the good life...lol ;)

Mel

KB, come home in one piece bro, and I'll drink my best of wine with ya, for starters... ;)

if and when i join,it will be to fight.
Like i told kit earlier tonight,i dont want to ride a desk for god knows how long.
I want to do something that will make a difference. Both to me,and those around me. (No,im not saying we dont need rear echelon guys, they are just as important as anyone else).

BTW-sheldon, when were you at eglin? mom and dad were at Moody AFB from 77-86.

Well Mo', I wouldn't say I was 'riding a desk'...as a 305'E, I was a general CSS, specialty AWACS mini-frame depot level repair...

Ok, who am I kidding, I was 'riding a desk'...except we didn't have any desks...lol

The cool part was that I was sent to Tyndall Field to do on-board avionics on some F-105/106 drones that Sperry-Rand was making up as targets for the pilots...

Cool stuff, $1,000,000 'remote control' aircraft...lol

p.s. The Florida 'panhandle' is a freaking hoot! I loved it! Hell, the memories get better with each year passed...lol ;)

Crap, it just occured to me that I'm taking away from Ryan's much more important post. Sorry 'bout that Ryan, if I could split this off I would, but I don't see any point in deleting it now.

Again, sorry Ryan...

Mo, if ya care to, we take this offline.

Ryan, to you and your bro's, we're with ya man! All the best, prayers here, kick ass, be safe, and come home in one piece. Again, to you and yours...we're with ya in spirit.

"Cover your six, and stay focused!"
