would like to share my impressions of these 2 knives, after carrying them for about a month, both pros and cons:

the emerson CQC-7 i got has the chisel edge tanto blade w/a durable black coating - the chisel edge is ok, not just nuts about it, but easy to sharpen - kinda funky to use, as its a left hander if i understand correctly - if ya have used 1 ya know what i mean - the knife has a very solid lock up, and comparing it with some of my other liner locks it is very well fitted - the liner lock itself coulda been finished better, some rough edges were it was cut out - but not that big a deal - fairly easy to flick open w/wrist, carries well in pocket - really a folding fighter not fighter/utility knife IMHO.

the BM AFCK i got was the large plain black blade - very sharp from factory, and after 5 w/a steel really really sharp - blade design is better for all around use, and loses nothing to the tanto as a self defense blade IMHO - knife has the best action i've ever had - easy easy to flick open, very sure lock up, handle fits my hand excellent - i really like this knife - carry it 24/7 now - before i got it i really thought the emerson was #1 but this 1 is a little better - like a A- for the emerson, and a A for the BM - only neg about the BM is it seems like the blade could open in your pocket rather easily, blade comes out pretty easy - hasnt ever done it, just seems like it could -also the liner could have been finished better, ala emerson- rough in some spots - either 1 of the knives would make an excellent carry folder, but since both cost about the same, i would rate the BM the winner based on the handle shape, smooth action, and the better blade design for every day use, IMHO - i really like mine a lot for sure................

hope of interest to ya

BM AFCK ... great knife for everyday use, but wow is BM below the bar on fit and finish within price range. They just push the envelope to see what is the max they can get away with. The uninformed and illadvised will just pay, not know any better and shut up. The educated consumers will send their knife back and get the repair department to do the QC that should have been done in the first place (for this price range); and it cost about 10% for shippign and insurance.

Bottom line, BM is in this racket to make money, not friends. Some makers have found a way to do both but BM truly doe$n't care!

agree 100% fit on both could be better - for example the fit and finish on my spyderco centofante is excellent, better than either 1 of these - and has the secondary blade lock so no accidental closing on this 1 - i like the centofante too - but the finish probs are minor, on mine at least, not really enough to send em back for work - the imperfections give them 'character' lol - but must admit finish on the centofante is better - never hear much about the centofante collaborations, but IMHO the large 1 is a helluva knife - but just seems 'delicate' compared to the emerson?BM - ohjust looks more delicate, might be stronger - its hard to figure out which 1 to carry sometimes LOL- shame spyderco discontinued it

The AFCK has well documented problems with blade play and Emerson has problems with QC as well. Not sure why you don't look at some other models!

What I mean is that there are better blades in the price ranges, but both seem to be very good knives! My Mini AFCK is amazing!

[I have owned both of these knives. The CQC7 was the worst knife I ever owned. Didn't cut well, dulled very fast, liners were weak and were rough. I sold it. My AFCK I have had for four years. It is a rock. I have tried to replace it as a user four times. I have MT socom's, MOD's and various Spyderco's etc, but the AFCK was always the one in my pocket. That is until my new job required me to carry a smaller knife. What did I get? A Benchmade Mini Stryker. I realize Benchmades are sometimes considered to be crappy knives, but the trick is to 1. make sure you get a good one, 2 NEVER pay full retail, or even online dealer prices for Benchmades. At those prices they are not worth it. Get one on the exchange for 60% off retail and your good to go.

Just my two cents......

Roger that. Retail for BMs is rediculous and even the 33% of retail with the on-line stores puts BM in the "premium" price range wihtout premium QC/fit & finish. I like the AFCK and carry it more than most in my rotation, but wish that they would step up to the plate!

Nimrod, you seem to be casting a blanket indictment of Benchmade, so what knife in the $100 price range do you consider to be better than say the 710 HS?

I have owned four 710s and three 730s, and I don't know of a better knife for the price anywhere, fit and finish included.

The 800 is a little bit long and thin for continous hard use, but if you keep the screws tight, they provide a lot of good cutting. I have never noticed any fit and finish problems with any of the AFCKs I owned. So what is your idea of a problem with fit and finish, and what company does it better for $100?

Steve: My "blanket" was based upon my personal experiences with the 750 I sent back the day I received it from the dealer as it was horrible, the fit and finish of my AFCK M2 when I got it, and what I learn from others on the Forums and elsewhere.

Now, just so you know, I carry my AFCK regularly and like the knife, notwithstanding that it had to be sent back to be made right and that the fit and finish are not up to par with a Buck 110 that costs $40 at a Big Mart.

The 710s that I have personally seen looked good though I do not own one and have never used one. I do, however, have a BM 940 Osborne which I came out publically on the Forums when I received it and commented about how GOOD the overall quality appeared to be.

If you are happy with your 710 M2, I would not dispute your choice. If I didn't have other knives in that size/weight and style catagory I wouldn't even rule out one for myself.

I bid you peace and friendship.

agree would never pay retail - got about 30-40% off - ya gotta admit either 1 of these knives is a hell of a knife for less than $100 - the AFCK is a heck of a knife and mine has no blade side play probs, or any other really - i like it

Pretty strange things occur sometimes here, exactly as at the rest of the world at least.
Thousands (or tens of thousands?) satisfied BENCHMADE customers keep silence but some unsatisfied make quite great fuss to flame company's name and to prove that it makes mess only! Hmmm, isn't this a small bit too simply and a small bit too biased to be truth?

I have 9 (nine) BM's and so far I haven't experienced any quality problem. AFCK and Ares are the knives I carry the most frequently and probably they are taking the most load of use - and I still have no problems with them.

Am I lucky chap or am I somewhat old-fashioned (to tell off BENCHMADE seems to be pretty fashionable now, isn't it?)? Or maybe I do know how to use my knives?

Some quality problems someone has experienced? Wow, please show me the manufacturer who never released any "lemon"! This is the warranty exists for, isn't it? Just send your knife back and they will fix or replace it for free. Is someone refused to do this within terms of warranty?

I don't think that "lemons" among BM's are any more frequently released than among other makes in the same price range - so why "the lemon made by BENCHMADE" causes so much fuss if occur?

Maybe BM's are not the best buys, you can get only a small bit less of knife for far less money from some another manufacturers. But they are certainly among the best knives!
