Building my first forge...

I guess I don't get your point... maybe the pics don't look as hot as it was or something. I heated the tip of a 1/4" x 2" piece of 5160 until it was sparking and popping when I pulled it out (not at 5 psi mind you).

I am able to hot cut 1/4" 5160 to a knife size chunks in 3-4 heats. If that's not hot enough, then I guess I'm fine running a "less hot" forge.

If you want I can still go out and measure it when I have a minute...

Sparking is definitely hot enough. I was concerned that given the size of it that a 100k burner wasn't big enough. When you mentioned red hot, I was concerned because orange is normally the color/heat needed for forging. Sounds like you are happy with the results, which is what matters most.

Yeah I'm pretty satisfied with it... used up a lot of propane to repeatedly cure all those layers.

It definitely gets hot enough. I tested it to heat treat some 5160 and the stock broke like glass on the anvil. I'm not going to pursue welding heats just yet, but I hope it will get that hot if I decide to someday.
