Recommendation? Custom Knife Scale Tips for a Newb?

Hello all,

Saw some beautiful micarta scales on the EDC pic thread in General and managed to find some slabs online; however, I am a total newb when it comes to knife customization, etc. So, I was wondering if you all had any tips, tutorials, do's and don'ts, etc., for someone with zero experience to turn a slab into sweet, custom scales (or making my own micarta slabs from scratch for that matter).
