Hawaii Knife Life - daily use for work and play

I needed to lay some granular fertilizer side dressing today and used the wood scaled SAK to open bags and make a scooper.

I like this model as the wood is unfinished. The oils from your hand and usage starts to create a neat scale condition that deepens in color as you use it.

Stopped and did some short hiking through the brush with the Glock Field Knife. I harvested a little aloe in case of sunburn. This knife and sheath are very utilitarian and works well as a beater.

Visited an old military pill box and found an arrow a hunter lost. These old military posts are strewn around all over the island (along with ordinance).

Love this thread. I figured you’d have run out of knives by now and we’d get repeats. But no! Still more knives!

Thank you sir! Like many of us I love to collect and use different offerings from different manufacturers and makers.

I have not delved into the world of higher end or customs, as I am sure that rabbit hole would swallow me completely!

Thanks for a very entertaining thread. I have some of the same blades, but my third of an acre gives me a lot less opportunity to put them to work.

Th stretch the strap on that leather sheath, let me suggest denatured alcohol. You can get a twelve ounce bottle for a couple of bucks, or you can spend a buck more for a two ounce bottle. It will be a red plastic bottle labeled “Shoe-Stretch”. Sure, you can probably accomplish the same thing with water, but why not use a product formulated especially for the task.

Thank you the encouraging words and for the excellent suggestion on using Shoe-Stretch, I looked it up and it looks like it would work well on keeping the stretched leather in form.

Ear worms are wrecking havoc as usual. I tried an experiment using about a hundred ears by topping the ears to see if the worms will stop drilling. I used the Mora filet knife to slice the tops. The thin blade made short work of the task.

The sheath design is interesting, I believe they were going for a quick dry design. I think I would prefer a regular style sheath as this one is a little finicky about putting it back in due to the smaller opening.

In an effort to speed up kernel fill, I cut off the tassels to encourage the plants to devote more nutrients to the ears.

I used an old BlackJack in 1095 Cryo designed by Ken Warner. The thin convex and distal taper combined with an easily manipulated small blade with a nice belly made this enjoyable and worked great. A nice patina started developing a few minutes into the work. I’m really starting to like this knife!

Before heading home for lunch I took a few spins around the farm to harvest a few doves. Headshots are preferred so the breast is not damaged.

Heaven is cruising in a nice old truck, picking off a few game birds while enjoying some coffee from a thermos. Having Dark Side of the Moon playing in the background competed the experience.

Used a Case Trapper to clean up the birds... now I just need about 20 more, some bacon, a few toothpicks, and a fire...

Have a great weekend folks!

This is a cool thread bruh. You would be right at home here in Alabama. Honestly I think the University’s new QB is from HI. I am an Auburn fan, and suspect you might be too since we are the premier Ag school in the US. I expected to see some Spam at this point in a HI thread!

Thanks for the kind words, and yes Auburn is a great school for sure. I own a business that caters to Univerities mutagenic research in the winter so I’m fortunate enough to work with several professors and grad students from around the world. If you know any Ag students send them my way!

Oh and as far as SPAM goes... it’s cheaper by the dozen! Musubi is a favorite around here!

Dude, that’s awesome. Please keep the great pics flowing. What can you share about hunting there? What type of rifle/shotgun/archery? Kill any wild pigs?

I usually use a Weatherby .270 and my son carries my old Savage .243. I’ll upload some pics from the next hunt during dressing.

I don’t pig hunt as often since selling my quad. I use an old SKS for that. I don’t have enough big dogs to knife hunt them, but I have many friends who go regularly. It’s an adrenaline rush for sure!
