I recently got a 1946 US issue artic sleeping bag in near mint condition. One prob it really needs to be washed. But the tag says not to dry clean. Its a down bag, so what do I do?
If it is DOWN then washing isn't the real problem, ITS DRYING it out. You need to dry it and FLUFF it at the same time so the feathers don't clump together. We use to dry our goose down jackets in a dryer with a tennis shoe or two thrown in to help FLUFF them!
I recently bought some down soap (ThunderDown made in USA
) in a local outdoor goods store and got some helpful hints from the young lady who served me. Her advice was to wash by hand in the bathtub a couple of times and rinse thoroughly. Then spread out (not hang) in the sun for a few days, teasing out the clumps of down as it starts to dry. Finally drying is done in a dryer (preferably commercial) with a tennis ball to fluff up the down.
Hope this helps.
