I posted this question on the general forum before I realized this was the place to really find the answer.

OK heres the scenario, You somehow find yourself in nowhere land. A train wreck or some other disaster that left you in the middle of an unpopulated area. How would you care for your 0-1 or similar high carbon steel knife. The tropics or jungle I guess would be very different in resourses than the woods but what would you use from the environement to care for it? No tuff Cloth or wd40.

If you were stranded with a vehicle close
use some of the engine oil or fuel in the
case of diesel fuel. It can be wiped off
before use with little residue.
animal fat without blood will work terrific
in any area.

Keep it dry, sharp, and clean, and the sheath dry and cleaned. If I'm using it and and sharpening regularly, it shouldn't rust. Something about a cutting knife gathers no rust...

People wandered around with high carbon steels for a very long time before anyone found out you needed to oil them to keep them from rusting, and most of those people didn't have rusty blades. And if bad comes to worse, dry shave with it every once in a while, and it'll pick up all those good oils from your face...

If I just been involved in a wreck, I wouldn't be to concerned about the knife but trying to think how to live, if I make it back alive then I'd wipe it down some type oil after I took a nice long bath. My 2 cents.
