Knife related projects - please share

A couple weeks ago I was thrift shopping and picked up these two new blades.

The chef's knife is nothing impressive, but for nostalgia's sake I bought it because it's a Marshall Field's knife and I'm a Chicago guy. The cleaver is a Forgecraft HiCarbon that appears to be around 50 years old from my research. Had some ugly rust spots and a loose handle. I removed all of the rust and knocked the old handle off. Grabbed some mahogany and brass from Menards and attempted my first handle.

Went with a 3:5 ratio having a thicker scale on the right to make this a right handed cleaver. Put on my "respirator" and got to work.

Rough cuts done, ready to start shaping

Mostly finished at this point but need to reprofile the edge.

I just rounded the edges on the left scale. The right side I sanded into a subtle D shape to fill the palm.

That's right! I figured I would give it a try, and it turned out pretty well. I'll post another picture once I have a new edge on it.

Nice job on the cleaver re-handle Jeff.(love that respirator BTW.;))

I re-handled a couple a few years ago myself.

This is a huge one I re-handled in Oak and chopped the top corner off for a meaner look and weight reduction.
It still weighed better than two pounds though.(9" blade)

Thanks, I'm sure my next one will be slightly better. That does give for a mean look, good idea on that slant!

snapped one yesterday post HT.
had to harden in 2 heats due to length and it picked up an impressive warp - snapped when I tried to straighten it out.
OTOH, I should be able to make 2 knives out of the scraps.

Sounds like you're making the best of the situation

Bummer at least you can reuse the pieces.
So what were you making a sword?

naah - just a little scandinavian influenced chopper made from a hoof rasp.

good stuff guys!

OFF TOPIC: i don't think i am getting all the notifications on threads i'm subscribed to when new posts are added. there were several threads that were updated that i did not get notifications for. anyone else having those issues?

I wonder if that's due to the switchover. I have people that aren't getting my replies to PM's that were created before the switchover. I send them a new one, and bam, they get it.

some great projects in here, guys!

I may need to get my hands on an old cleaver now ;)

I'm still working on these HK Knives, got to figure out a new design soon though

Thinking about trying to do this well, my original plan for it didn't work out because the tangs to short

Peter, see how I used g10 as a spacer for this paring knife? Easy to do and would work for your groan

Got back around to the Old Hickory mod this weekend. Glued scales, liner, and pins in place.

Cut and filed excess pin material.

Shop is still under construction, so I made do for an anvil to peen the pins.

Roughed out the handle shape with an 80 grit belt. Tried to chamfer the edges, but I wasn't being very consistent so I quit for the night. May try that by hand, or adjust the handle shape to make that a little easier.

The OH paring knife was just a 1/4 tang. Here's the view from the top.
