How many of you have used Kydex to make holsers for items other than knives? I was just thinking that my cell phone could use a good holster (anyone tried this? if so, how do you keep the heat from damaging the phone?).

Hi e_utopia

Yaaa I've played around with doing other things....

Actually I'm bored with it unless I'm doing a knife or related item...

I made a clip to hang my phone on in the truck,
A flashlight holder for my riot gun,, a T.P.D.(Tactical Pez Depenser) (Holds a Santa Claus Pez on his LBV gear) LOL for a friend who went to Bosnia.

Different types of tool holders for all kinds of things....

I'm making a drink holder for my dad's John Deere garden tractor right now...

It's a great product,,that Many, Many things can be made from.. It's only limited to your imagination.. Go Nuts.. Mold the world!! LOL

Hi JB...

The way I would do it is with a wooden mock up...
It would have to be fairly exact though...

That's a lot of work though for a phone....
Might be fun to do though....

If it's a popular phone maybe you could sell them...

A camera lens cap.
A Knights shield for my son.
A Scrap metal rake.
A Wrist brace.
A door stop holder.
A cable tray for computers.
A vent cover.
A target holder.
A window scraper.
I am sure there are a lot of other things...

I made my SCA armor out of it, as well as a couple of knife handles and some tool mountings. It's great for anything that needs to absorb repeated shocks.

I have made a few flashlight holsters, but they're basically the same as a knife sheath, more or less. Also multitool sheaths. I want to try and make a few for my Activator instrument, which is a chiropractic adjusting tool. Any suggestions on what would work would be appreciated. I have something in mind, but I don't know how feasible. The tip is rubber, so it must not contact the Kydex or it will get beaten up, and they are surprisingly expensive. The instrument is stainless steel and runs around $250, so I need to preserve the finish as best as possible. Any suggestions as far as design?

Holsters for all my fav carry guns, mostly glocks...a natural for the black gun. Several diff designs from pancake style to a minimalist speed setup for doing ipsc shooting. Of course a sheath for every sheathless blade I had worthy of carry. Made good use of my early learner projects that shouldn't get out of the shop because of cosmetics but still functional by using them as 'car holsters' or 'furniture holsters' or , use your imagination.

Tool holders of all kinds, mag holders, surefire holder for belt and car. Now making up several designs for the Pal led lights, one you can wear on belt or cap for hands free use. Used scraps by cutting strips and have a jig made to mold out the hearing protection holders you can hang on your belt. For your phone I would consider wrapping it well and tight with a light plastic film, use plaster of paris to make a mold, use the mold to make a dummy phone out of fiberglass. I've done such projects but lots of trouble for a one time deal unless worth the effort, in this case I don't know how improtant to you . You might also consider visiting a repair ctr. that works on your model phone and see if you can buy a 'scrapper' for a cpl. bucks...could be a water damaged or otherwise broke and dead unit....then your wouldn't care if your 'original' took a bit of abuse.
I was real prolific my first year with kydex...kinda tapered off since work took over my life for a bit.

Oh I bout forgot..most fun item made to date is a lil neck holster for my naa mini revolver. The mini mag is a bit big for a neck carry (made an iwb rig for it) but the little one does just fine on a neck chain...safe, secure, but always at the ready. Made a cpl designs starting a cpl. years back...probably one of my fav. for a carry piece. Don't laugh or flame too hard all you big gun toters...it does have a purpose.
