Matthew Walker Knot whisk broom
1/4" sisal rope. I added a 3rd strand to increase the size of the knot and whisking part.

Nice ... handy too.

asemery, I have trouble making a substantial knot to weigh a rope end sufficiently to throw up and over a limb or crosspiece. Is there something simple? Securing a rock doesn't always work well ... dodging it if my knots hold it is another matter as well. Suggestions appreciated.

A monkey fist knot is the tratitional Navy method used to transfer ropes between ships and from ship to shore.
In your case you could put your rock in a strong plastic bag and tie a lighter line to the bag. Throw the bag with the weight over the crosspiece and use the attached lighter line to pull your rope in place. Good luck. Tony
