I collect vintage Joseph Rodgers and Sons knives - nothing too fancy, just some nice users

My oppertunities to collect have dried up so I was wondering what the modern branded JR stuff is like

I quite like the look of the single bladed clippoint but I've no idea what the fit and finish is like as i can only get them from online retailers?

The modern company has no connection to the historic one, other than buying up a bunch of Sheffield names in the 1980's. They contract out work, so quality is variable, but generally on a par with the other remaining Sheffield cutlery firms. Because of the Joseph Rodgers name, the knives tend to bit more expensive. They're all stainless.

That seems to be the same of all the old makers

Do any of the remaining Sheffield cutlery firms make and sell their own stuff?

if you can not select it yourself, at least ask the seller to personally inspect it before sending it to you, explaining that if you are not totally happy with it it will be returned for a refund. Some sellers do a good job at selecting a nice one for you.

They only use stainless these days Alex, but since they get knives made up for them by a variety of jobbing cutlers, and other firms, it may well vary
I see. Any chance that they use some local, English-made steels?

I just recieved this George Wostenhlm IXL last week. Another name bought by Eggington. I initially purchased 2 one had to be sent back but this one is very good. Good fit and finish and great pull and snap. I will say that both came with the tips rounded off but 3 minutes on the stone cured that. Overall I am happy and the shop I ordered from was quick to help me out with the exchange of the other one. As far as the steel I am no means an expert but felt softer on the stone compared to 440c as found on GEC and Buck. I feel it will hold up well but might need a tune up more frequently. Hope this helps.

Paul
