Sheath size guestion?

I need to make a bowie sheath.I have only made a couple so far.This is an 11" blade 1-3/4" wide. My concern is the width of the guard.It is 3-1/2" wide.I have been using a 1/2" welt. Is it normal for the guard to stick past the top of the sheath on both sides?

If I make this sheath as usual it will be aprox 2-3/4" wide and the guard will stick over the top edge about 3/8" on each side.
 
I asked a master maker on this forum the same question about a month ago, and he assured me that there was nothing wrong the guard sticking out past the width of the sheath.

Thanks rayban for helping a newby to sheath making.

Very nice sheath.What tool or method do you use to do the texture?
 
RH...that's crafttool 294 from Tandy, they come in 3 different sizes.
 
As Ray noted - sticking out past the edge on either side is just fine and is historically correct as well.........
