Staff Fighting sources?

Alright guys. I know not many people here are a fan of the staff or “bo” as a weapon. I used to be in the same boat. However, I accompanied a friend of mine to a weapon sparring event yesterday, and I must say, there was one fighter with a couple of his pupils that made great use of the 6 foot staff! One of his pupils lost the match but put up a hell of a fight. The teacher and his other student both won decisive victories. Keep in mind this is a dog brothers style event, not a touch sparring event. I went up to the instructor and asked him where he learned how to do that, he more or less responded “Here and there, haven’t even been doing this for 2 years, just practice a lot I guess.” He went on to say that he learned a lot of what he practices from a dog brothers DVD and was for the most part, self taught. Said that he mostly just sparred 2-3 times a week for almost two years while practicing at home a lot of the time. I cant help but want to learn how to use the staff now after what I just saw. Before, I thought that it was far from effective. After what I just saw, I have completely changed my mind on it. Can anybody recommend any other sources similar to the dog brothers DVD? I am actually going to start training with the guy next week, and wanted to get a look at what I would probably be learning for the next 3-4 of months.

Thanks again.

Hello. I haven't seen the Dog Brothers Staff DVD so I can't really say if these are similar in any respect, but I have Kelly Worden's Sibat DVD, the original. Excellent video. I highly recommend it. Worden also has 2 other DVD's on staff, haven't seen those though. Sibat is 5' long, but the moves will easily translate.

Another source for staff is Modern Knives #6: Filipino Stick Fighting. There is a segment by "Big" Ken Smith, a student of Worden's showing staff use based on the "Sumbrada" pattern used in FMA. This segment is very good, I highly recommend it.

There are others I know of, though I haven't actually seen them:

This site has some staff videos from the FMA standpoint, as well as some from Ninjutsu, and various styles of Kung fu.

There are others out there. Hope this helps.
