My students have an old sword that they want to use for ceremonial purposes. It has a little bit of rust on it and is made in India. What should they use to polish it up?

There are a million and five ways to approach the issue. Some simple searching for, say, sword conservation, sword with rust, rust on steel, etc. None of this is exactly rocket science.

If the sword is stamped India, it is no doubt a reproduction of something. Fine steel/iron wool, bronze wool, either with light oil will soften and bust most rust pretty quickly. Foil and oil is good for antique gentle scrubbing, that leaves one million and four ways to try.

If one is not handy with tools, or not familiar with some simple truths, I would suggest doing nothing before running some searches, watching some videos, cleaning your domicile, scrubbing pots, washing your car.

One can't just wish rust away but there are some pretty straightforward methods that don't require much aside from trying stuff and experiencing life.

Cheers
