Hi Peter La,
Things have been a little quiet here and I know you are a man in need of answers . I have a VTAC and have used it on dried wood about that size. Since it is a tactical tool and is designed to withstand use against hard objects it comes with a rather obtuse, though very sharp edge. I have found that splitting wood longitudinally, wood will almost explode apart because of the wedge shape of the head/grind. I haven't found it to be the best tool for cutting across grain because of that grind. Andy (the Pres.) has said they will regrind the edge to your taste if you chose to ship it back to them for that. Someone will probably chime in if that is not the case in a day or two. I usually turn to my SFNO or Ratweiler for that kind of work. The VTAC is a FUN tool and I recommend you get one but for backcountry work your EU17M or another great ATC hawk would be a better choice.
