Hello Everybody! I am a student studying Physical Education. I want to specialize in outdoor education later on. I was wondering if there are any wilderness survival or outdoor guiding training courses that are free, and run a apprenticeship type system. Where you get experience and in return the company gets a fully trained prospective employee. Has any one heard of such an opportunity?

You can do this in the USAF and they will even pay you during the process. You have to be selected at basic. High entrance exam scores, 11th grade reading level. pass physical requirements, and pass the MMPI (psych test...also given at least one time a year if you become an instructor)

One downfall...the attrition rate is about 75%...so better be sure you won't quite unless you want to be a cook for four years.

good luck

We used to have a TA program that was much like you described. The students had to be matriculated at the University but once they completed the course and applied, I'd interview and bring a few into the program. IT took about two years to complete. I've posted on it elsewhere in this forum.

Check out Prescott College. They had a similar program for awhile... may still have it.
