Just had to ask this off topic question! However, I know for 'some' people, namely our moderators, this is FAR from 'off topic'.

I'm a secondary mathematics teacher! Yeah, I teach Algebra, Geometry, Alg II, Trig, AND Problem Solving. OH NO, WORD PROBLEMS!!!

I really like problem solving though! I guess that's why Greg's "Improvisation" quizzes get me going!

You’re a math teacher? Now, every time I read your posts the room will start to spin, and I will fall asleep! ;-)

A molecular biologist/molecular geneticist doing research in academia.

I love math, problem solving (Plainsman, I am with you on that!) and research. I have not much practical experience in wilderness skills but believe that wilderness survival is an 'art' that challenges the mind, the body and the soul. It requires logical thinking, situation analysis, improvisation and creative problem solving. It also needs a good deal of general knowledge in many fields spreading from high tech material sciences (what computer part can be used for what, radio transmitter from car) to experimental anthropology (flint knapping and primitive skills). It gives me intellectual refreshment after daily work and helps me to stay in touch with my deeper self, the archeotypic hunter.
My interest started after a trip to Montana and I got sucked into this forum by Greg's 'fire starter challenge'.
Due to lack of time, I am mainly in the 'arm-chair and weekend enthusiast' category but enjoy the company very much.

My apology if it came out too long.
Best to All,

Hi Plainsman:

Another teacher here! Elementary right now, but I used to teach high school (math, science, special services and alternate ed.)
For the past few years I've been doing lots of computer networking stuff for the SD besides my normal day teaching, so I don't feel quite so fossilized.
Teaching in a small town has been fun - I'll soon be working on the third generation - and I've taught some of the teachers, and even my current principal - makes for a strange relationship!

The stuff about math is untrue! Computer stuff is what really glazes eyes - not with kids but certainly with adults. I put in the first few $100k of networks with the understanding that I had to explain exactly what I was doing to the board. After that I put in a lot more with the understanding that I wouldn't explain!
I would warn you that if you show older people something that DOES interest them with regard to computers, you'll be the one with glazed eyes in a hurry.

Before teaching I did lots of stuff, cop, investigator, blaster, farm work.

I am a third year microbiology student at MSU. Which means that most of the time I am studying, but occasionally I have time to get out and have fun. I am a member of the Outing Club at MSU, which does everything from backpacking to skydiving. I really enjoy backpacking and camping. I was in Boy Scouts from tiger cubs to getting my Eagle just before my eighteenth birthday. I am fortunate enough to have several of my Eagle friends share my enthusiasm for hiking so we try to go together as much as possible.

I don't have a day 'job' yet. Unless you count the schooling.
